Despite previous FDA agreement, he wants high-dose vax as control. That's (a) medically inappropriate for trial popln under age 65, (b) not legally available in Europe, where trial was done.

@cstross@wandering.shop @Green_Footballs@mastodon.social If they think letting disease rip through the population will "evolve" us, by selecting for good genes... well, that takes a while to happen. Here's a walk-through of a paper on the evidence for an ancient viral pandemic in Asia. Yes, it changed the genome... slightly (42 genes with evidence of some selective mutation). But... that pandemic apparently ran for about 20,000 years. https://www.someweekendreading.blog/really-long-covid/

@kcarruthers@infosec.exchange Here's a walk-through of an earlier paper (Ahlqvist, et al., 2024), reaching the same conclusion with a variety of pain killers and a variety of disabilities. The key is to use sibling data so the comparison is genetics-aware. A genetics-ignorant comparison is useless, given the genetic component in autism, ADHD, and intellectual disability. Exception: aspirin is *protective* against intellectual disability. https://www.someweekendreading.blog/autism-acetaminophen/

@cstross@wandering.shop @lauren@mastodon.laurenweinstein.org @MissConstrue@mefi.social @ParadeGrotesque@mastodon.sdf.org @androcat@toot.cat You're right, his time with HUAC and the McCarthy goons was indeed an early sign. OTOH, he was "just fitting in" with the McCarthy goons. "Just fitting in" so he could be a member of the elite was, I think, paramount for Nixon. He *could* have been great, had he kept better company and been under the influence of better people. That's both (a) a moral weakness on his part to be so easily persuaded to do what the VIPs did, and (b) a diagnosis of American society that the Republican VIPs were so bad. Trump isn't even anywhere near that league. He fails on a much more pathetic level, and did not have the seeds of greatness in the first place.
