@cstross@wandering.shop The times I've had an editor to go over an essay or some such before publications, it has generally felt like something of relief. It did take awhile for me to appreciate the interaction, but eventually I realized the editors (usually) wanted me to look good, and that would make them look good (same as dealing with makeup on live TV appearances, oddly enough -- something I've tolerated by never liked, even though it always made me look better on camera).
One issue I've had is with titles and headlines. The New York Times (at least years ago when I had an invited oped in there) tended to choose headlines that drove many authors nuts, including me.
