New film about the infamous “Blue Boy” trial which ‘effectively outlawed gender reassignment surgery in Japan until 1998’. The film features trans actors and the director, Kasho Iizuka, is a trans man. It’s interesting what he says about how trans women in 1960s Japan had to ‘overexpress’ femininity. This requirement to hyperconform to gender stereotypes was still very much the case for trans men & women in the 1990s when I transitioned here in the UK.
