Instance admin. Not a professional sysadmin like some here; fuck me, I'm not even a *good* sysadmin. But if I'm going to have a tinpot dictator with nonsensical rules in charge, I figure it outta be one I can at least agree with.

I post rarely, but I'm trying to up the frequency. Typical topics are transit, tech, and whichever show or book I'm partway through.

Posts are likely to be profanity-laden - not out of hate, I'm just pretty darn evangelical about some of my favourite projects.

@emily@fedi.uni.horse hell, making it to the point of "We have the uptake and userbase that we have to seriously design and implement robust moderation tooling" is an endorsement in and of itself It may need to cook a bit for anyone's individual community to find it works well enough to warrant jumping [0], but I'd argue it's the best we're likely to see for some time [0] Perfect it is not, I'll cop to that.

@emily@fedi.uni.horse honestly, the best thing one might be able to say about Matrix is that they're down to "We have a million small issues, as have mostly sorted out the biggest ones" Funding without VC cash, self-hostable, usable without starting with a payment, message history? Mostly there Most papercuts are known papercuts, like moderation, little oddities with video / voice rooms, on-boarding, etc. In my mind, that's one of the signs of a mature, stable, trustworthy project

@cas@social.treehouse.systems I'd have thought that "New Conversation > New Video Room" would have made the list for a voice room It just idles there, with people able to drop in and out as they please, and no explicit "Start Call" (It falls down in other ways, like the inability to see which users are currently in the room, but that's a smaller lift than "Missing entirely")

@grishka@mastodon.social And honestly, this might just be the exact balance I consider reasonable for things like this CLI tools that are *powerful*. Tucked away by default, but easy to use and enable if you want The option to remove guardrails that, in absolute numbers, lots of people maybe *should* have, but with no other penalty or nags if you tell your device to do things your way Guardrails are fine, IMO. The ability to turn them off, however, is a requirement that's not always respected

Fuck it, I give up - the No_GMS system image for the #BlackBerry #Q25 has Google Share ripped out imperfectly, and so com.android.nfc keeps crashing *constantly* It's ~40% of my battery drain at this

*Just* going through the Google packages, and I'm up to 92/224 disabled AOSP my *ass*, Android is Google's sandbox now

Wait, battery settings / history works now, because apparently Google has their hooks in the *battery history* Why the fuck is there any non-AOSP code in battery history

Fuck it, I give up - the No_GMS system image for the #BlackBerry #Q25 has Google Share ripped out imperfectly, and so com.android.nfc keeps crashing *constantly* It's ~40% of my battery drain at this point, which is obscene Time to flash and 'adb disable' the GMS version I guess
