AI has now damaged almost every part of a reasonable OSS stack, from systemd to Python itself.

We need to understand that blast radius, to understand where and how energies can be spent, whether it's reverting that damage, working with governance to prevent and contain damage, or whether it's forking damaged projects entirely.

We cannot afford the luxury of time on this one. We need to understand the problem **now**.

Picking the lesser evil is good. Picking the lesser evil when "do no evil at all" was perfectly on the table is not good.

This is about choosing Anthropic over OpenAI instead of just not fucking using AI in the first place. This is about leaving Twitter for centralized social media corp du jour. This is about any number of things people keep doing.

On the note of AI damaging OSS, I am deeply unimpressed by the excuses for fence-sitting around AI. Like, people criticizing a thing can be *deeply fucking annoying* and still be *correct*. If any community should understand this at a visceral level, it's OSS bros.

RE: @glyph@mastodon.social

AI ethics, safeguards, alignment, guardrails — all of it is this elaborate Potemkin village construction that looks like rationally considered ethics, while containing none of the actual *substance* of ethics.

It's too pitch-perfect that the whole thing is built as a shield in front of LLMs, themselves a Potemkin village that's shaped like general-purpose computing but that has none of the logic or structure needed to make that work.

Man, the whole DoD contract going to OpenAI resolution feels like the absolute worst case. The whole thing was really shrewd on Anthropic's part — from their perspective, either they get the contract, in which case they win, or they lose the contract, in which case news media spends an entire cycle doing free marketing for them and they win anyway. Now we're left with Altman controlling surveillance apparatus *and* news media doing propaganda work for Anthropic.

I don't have a take. I don't need to have a take. This absolute travesty, this abhorrent crime, will not become better by my having a take.

At the same time, it feels somehow weirdly callous to just go about my day, posting as normal. So fine, here's my take.

As mentioned before, I hate bringing this up because I have no evidence or expertise here, just a gut feeling. But I just can't help feeling like, aside from everything else aside about LLM chatbots, they're quickly becoming the leaded gasoline of our time.

Something doing real damage to human cognition, but in this diffuse and difficult to measure kind of way.

I swear, progressives need to get over the whole kicking at homeschooling thing. Public schools are home to an alarming amount of abuse, and I don't think I personally would have had a hope in hell of making it in the sciences without homeschooling as an alternative.

Yesterday, had an argument with an AI booster. I'm not going to link, both because I don't want to platform that and because I don't want anyone to go harass them. But what I thought was very interesting was that I asked point-blank if there was any degree to which ethical problems with LLMs could make them not want to use AI — they told me no, there was not, and implied that they evaluated AI purely on the basis of its efficacy.

No, opposing LLMs isn't "purity culture." I've seen this now from quite a few different people, and I disagree vehemently. It is good, actually, to have moral principles and hold to them, even when people with more money than you find said principles annoying.

Hot take: looking for a single silver-bullet Discord replacement is solving the wrong problem. Corporate power has pushed us towards everything-apps, but it's OK for the tool you use to communicate with other users of an open source project to look different from the tool you use to text your spouse and the tool you use to run voice chats with your gaming guilds.

I think the other piece of this that comes to mind for me is that, by and large, software developers as a culture lack class consciousness.

If you're pulling down a mid six-figure tech salary, you're rich *and* you have more in common with someone in homelessness levels of crushing poverty than you do Jeff Bezos. You're the kind of rich that can own a house, not the kind that national governments consider to be too big to fail.

Old enough to remember when, circa 2018, a few quite influential hashtag-the-resistance folks managed to convince themselves that Melania was somehow Trump's unwitting victim, and that she secretly wanted to escape. The new propaganda movie coming out puts that in sharp relief for me.

You know what? Let me amend that. There is one thing LLMs are good at: making spam. Lots and lots of spam. Almost by definition, it's hard to make good automated filters to detect it, so you basically need humans to sit there and read the slop. They're good at wasting time and DoSing brains.
