he/him

You probably heard about me because I am the founder of the Twisted python networking engine open source project. But I’m also the author and maintainer of several other smaller projects, a writer and public speaker about software and the things software affects (i.e.: everything), and a productivity nerd due to my ADHD. I also post a lot about politics; I’d personally prefer to be apolitical but unfortunately the global rising tide of revanchist fascism is kind of dangerous to ignore.

RE: @glyph@mastodon.social

okay even if you don't agree with me that persuasion is an effective strategy to achieve certain goals, we all _gotta_ get on the same page about this. people can be experts in one area and full of shit in another. they can even be experts in one area and still make a huge mistake in that same area every so often. we need to be able to disagree on stuff without putting the entire person in the trash.

also if I do say so myself "respect does not equate to obeisance" is a banger

More generally I am deeply suspicious of any thinking which is rooted in, "I, with my high intellect, sophisticated approach to problems, and vaguely exceptional vibe, am inherently superior to others and thus more capable of avoiding a risk while engaging in the same activity". The people most vulnerable to propaganda are those who believe they are too smart to fall for it, and it stands to reason that those who *believe* that they can use AI well are also at risk for pathological outcomes.

RE: @glyph@mastodon.social

Since I've gotten this feedback a couple times, I want to address it:

I know Cory is writing about *his specific* colleagues who he believes are using AI successfully, not devs in general, whose problems he has already implicitly acknowledged; I've moved the goalposts back to "developers in general".

That is, technically, an accurate description of what I did, but in the next post down in the thread, I explained *why*: I don't think his friends are special any more than mine are.

RE: @hynek@mastodon.social

This "friendly fire" point is really important. I am doing my best (and not always succeeding) to maintain empathy and kindness for LLM users in my critique, but this is *particularly* important for people that I like 75% agree with on LLMs. It's emotionally exhausting but we all *really* need to double down on that effort regardless, because all we have at this point is persuasion and nobody getting yelled at is getting persuaded.

I wish I could recommend this piece more, because it makes a bunch of great points, but the "normal technology" case feels misleading to me. It's not _wrong_, exactly, but radium paint was also a "normal technology" according to this rubric, and I still very much don't want to get any on me and especially not in my mouth

one way to tell that a company's product is really good and solves an important problem that customers are more than happy to spend money to solve, is when they start doing weird shell games with bundling and integration, hoping that you won't notice whether you are using the stuff you're buying or not

you know we've all been hard on Apple for their decisions in the last year but I gotta give them credit where credit is due: I really appreciate them putting in the work to help me stick to a budget. if they marketed the M5 Max on its gaming performance — when I really do *not* need an upgrade — I would be really tempted. but two pages of how great it is at "AI" makes it super easy to say "no thanks"

I no longer complain about information being delivered via video instead of text, because it's not "video". It's YouTube and TikTok. These platforms pay people to make content for them. If manpages paid out per view, you'd be getting your web framework docs *and* your makeup tutorials from them too

One of the reasons to prefer mature software, and in particular mature *open source* software, is that finding and fixing bugs takes forever. Consider this problem, which took 2 years to diagnose even after discovery. I think we finally figured it out: https://github.com/twisted/twisted/issues/12120

one of my favorite things on fedi is seeing an enormous infodump that is almost totally incomprehensible to me, where someone is just pouring out their heart about a topic that they love, in some gigantic thread of intense nerdery. sometimes I see people post self-consciously as if they feel like they shouldn't be filling up people's timelines with their special interest but I just want to say as a blanket statement, go for it. even if I can't quite understand the facts, the energy is sublime

If nazis are dropping bombs on you by flying planes that communicate by radio, blowing up their ground control radio towers or jamming their radio signals is not "censorship". Similarly, deplatforming is not about preventing their "dangerous ideas" from winning in the "marketplace of ideas", it is about disrupting their communications so they cannot organize and build power to kill people.

he/him You probably heard about me because I am the founder of the Twisted python networking engine open source project.

I have been hesitating to say this but the pattern is now so consistent I just have to share the observation: LLM users don't just behave like addicts, not even like gambling addicts. They specifically behave like kratom addicts. "Sure, it can be dangerous. Sure, it has risks. But I'm not like those other users. I can handle it. I have a system. It really helps me be productive. It helps with my ADHD so much."

it's truly amazing what LLMs can achieve. we now know it's possible to produce an html5 parsing library with nothing but the full source code of an existing html5 parsing library, all the source code of all other open source libraries ever, a meticulously maintained and extremely comprehensive test suite written by somebody else, 5 different models, a megawatt-hour of energy, a swimming pool full of water, and a month of spare time of an extremely senior engineer

Jeff Geerling, the affable and adorkable raspberry pi guy, was a misogynistic forced-birth tradcath extremist from at least 2009 to 2013, and as far as I know, still is today. Do not link to him and do not support his work. This is a matter of record on his own website: https://www.jeffgeerling.com/tags/abortion

I just do not have the time to write anything long-form about this but the ongoing Mozilla AI debacle is really indicative of a very, very troubling aspect of the broader AI debacle, which is that a strong majority of even the *actually* well-intentioned, smart leaders in tech have had their brains fully cooked by these heuristics machines

This is a great writeup of the continuing failure of passkeys to meet their potential. It demonstrates the gordian knot:

1. the ecosystem is confusing due to the plethora of different interacting layers
2. therefore, to simplify, every vendor attempts to own as many layers as they can, obscuring other vendors' tools
3. therefore, users are confused into thinking that passkeys are platform-specific, because their platform vendor is obscuring alternatives
