This is not “normal”. Skilled and productive people falling heads over heels over a word predictor and thinking it’s sentient is not normal. This is not the kind of effects that normal automation tools do. This is WEIRD and NOT NORMAL.

Something strange is happening here. This “tool” is modifying well-adjusted human brains in a strange (and I think destructive) way, and we’re seeing it happen to some prominent person every week. How many people are being taken in that we don’t even hear about?

#CBP #ICE illegally detained a US citizen in Chicago and dumped her to the street in WISCONSIN, TWO DAYS LATER. They didn’t even contact her family, or even let her charge her phone.

Did you expect your Meta “AI” glasses to send videos to Nairobi, Kenya, where a group of people are forced to watch videos and annotate them without complaining, no matter how scarring the footage? Because they are. That’s how #Meta is training their models: by exploiting the Global South and massively violating your privacy.

Indeed. USians—especially UISian congresscritters—seem to think of the President as entirely embodying the nation, and that tarnishing the former with an impeachment will tarnish the latter, and that this kind of pain is too much for the US population to bear. I think the reality is quite the opposite: by holding everyone, including the President, to account, you fortify the moral integrity of the nation.

We still *can* hold this President to power. Elect a Democratic congress this year, and encourage them to impeach and convict Donald Trump. He’s certainly got a long enough list of crimes to choose from.

Researchers from Johns Hopkins, Georgetown and Yale universities recently found that 60 FDA-authorized medical devices using AI were linked to 182 product recalls, according to a research letter published in the JAMA Health Forum in August. Their review showed that 43% of the recalls occurred less than a year after the devices were greenlighted. I think people wondering why US citizens aren’t more outraged by the wanton constitutional disregard committed by the US government need to realize that the US government has ALWAYS BEEN committing transgressions—just not against its white middle- and upper-class citizens.

From its founding, the US has treated certain populations as having less rights than its preferred class: the wealthy, white†, male, Protestant. It is NORMAL for the US to ignore its own constitution to oppress and exploit people. From African slaves, to displaced Native Americans, to Chinese railroad workers, to Banana Republics, to occupied Hawaii, to CIA-backed coups in Asia—UNCHECKED POWER IS THE DEFAULT.

IMO things finally changed for the better after the Civil Rights Act, thanks to the relentless sacrifice of its champions. But for CENTURIES prior, exploitation was the norm. Realize that what Trumpists want to do is to REVERT to how things were before the CRA.

One thing I’ve learned about writing UI code is to TRIPLE YOUR ESTIMATE. No matter how good you get, the feature will take three times as much work as you initially thought. I’ve found this to be an ironclad rule. I think this is because humans are messy, and human interaction is difficult to predict in enough detail to form complete requirements up front, especially for a new feature or mode of interaction. After your prototype “works”, you’ll spend a VERY long tail finding issues and tweaks that you need to make, especially if other people’s UI work start abutting yours. The work to tune the UI may not happen in a single clump—it may be spread out over weeks or months, and you may have to context switch back periodically to fix newfound issues with something you thought you were already done with. But the work will add up across the schedule, and you’d better have budgeted for it. #FridayDevAdvice #software #UI

I used to live in Kansas, in the Kansas City metro area. The city itself is lovely. Diverse-ish, tolerant, friendly, progressive. But it resides in the deep red state of Kansas. Just as Austin (and Dallas-Fort Worth) is a relatively progressive metro in a red state, Kansas City is subject to the awful whims of a christofascist and bigoted legislature and attorney general.

The news that trans Kansans will have their drivers’ licenses revoked IMMEDIATELY—without a grace period—is persecution, erasure, and criminalization of one’s existence. My heart is breaking for the victims of this open persecution. All my “christian” friends in Kansas who voted for the villainous characters in this legislature should be ashamed of themselves. Once again I believe that (many people inside) Anthropic are genuinely concerned about their products being used for violence; but also once again, it’s impossible to ignore that Dario Amodei’s crew sold their products to Palantir and the US military—what the hell did they think their customers were going to do with their stuff? Write poetry?

The “ethical” thing Anthropic can do at this point is to take the L and cancel their Palantir and Pentagon contracts and eat the lost revenue, and swear never to deal with the military-industrial complex again.

Will they do that? Doubtful. Anthropic is short of revenue, just like every other primary AI vendor out there.

Another fantastic episode of Tech Won’t Save Us. In this one, @parismarx@mastodon.online talks to Thea Riofrancos, author of “Extraction: The Frontiers of Green Capitalism” and professor of pol-sci at Providence College.

In this episode, Thea describes how extraction and mining MUST still occur even as we transition to renewable energy, and in fact, NEW mining and extraction must be done, to extract materials like lithium, copper, and cobalt, that we didn’t use to need so much of before. Also, producing the new supply chain for renewables may mean MORE dependence on carbon-based energies, at least in the short term. The environmental and societal impact of this NEW mining and extraction is an integral part of the transition.

Also interesting is a framing of the Petrostate (oil-based economies like the US) as a contrast to the Electrostate (renewable electricity-based economies like China).

Anyway, a gret listen, and packed full of insight.

Democratic lawmakers and executives need to stop wringing their hands and trying to get bipartisan consensus and whatnot and actually DO THINGS that benefit people. Do a thousand little things that add up to a lifetime of benefits for a lot of people. Do the opposite of Death by a Thousand Cuts: Life and prosperity by a thousand good choices.

HAVE AGENCY. There are SO MANY low hanging fruit that lawmakers and executives can address even as they wrestle with the truly hard problems. Address what you can. Build the muscle.

So it appears that ICE tells their recruits they get $50k bonus, but it comes with a severe REPAYMENT CLAUSE that says that recruits must pay back the full bonus amount BEFORE TAX if they quit or are fired for ANY REASON. So if ICE pays out $10k bonus this year (the $50k is paid out over five years) and the recruit either quit or is fired, the employee must pay back $10k, even if the employee only receives $7k after taxes. That means they would be $3k in the hole. This repayment clause is a trap, because 5 years is longer than Trump’s term. The chances that ICE will be abolished or at least severely restructured before then is virtually certain, meaning that recruits’ chances of getting fired or having to quit is also virtually certain. Another reason not to buy a #Tesla #Cybertruck: they are poorly made. As videos in this story show, the door strikers were not fastened properly to the car, causing one of this car’s rear doors to swing open on a highway on-ramp. The door happened to be the one next to their baby in a car seat. The bolts on the striker were very obviously not torqued correctly. How this level of obvious error escaped the manufacturing/quality control floor is unknown, but I suspect it’s because the Cybertruck was poorly designed to begin with, and also because Tesla cut corners everywhere during their manufacturing process to save money. @octothorpe@mastodon.online Access to nightly chargers is a huge roadblock. Most people in the #sfba live in apartment buildings, very few of which have chargers people can use easily. Many of the apartments buildings here are also old, and their landlords have no incentive to install chargers. As an aside, there seems to be a monopoly on residential charger installations. A colleague of mind found out that it costs $200k to install ONE CHARGER at an apartment complex in Cupertino, and the installer reserves the right to take a 50% cut of the charging fees. It’s really hard to justify spending $2M only to get 10 chargers for a building of a hundred units.

I’m not a #finance expert but this seems really bad. Banks haven’t needed this much cash infusion since the 2008 recession. On Oct 31, the Fed infused $51B of cash into one bank (they didn’t say which), and on Dec 28, they infused another $34B of cash into another bank (again they didn’t say which). This is after five years of zero such actions. The article speculates that there is a short squeeze: banks have been shorting precious metals like silver and gold, but their prices have skyrocketed. They’re getting margin-called. In any case, it seems that banks are suffering a liquidity crunch, to the tune of about $85B so far. Is this bad? #Porsche published a beautifully-detailed, hand-illustrated animation full of easter eggs for enthusiasts. What a wonderful way to celebrate the 911, and a refreshing contrast to the awful AI slop that we’ve been seeing from other companies. Nicely done. The odometer reading 74,911 while the car passes a street sign that says “Nürburgring, turn left in 5:19.546” is pretty cool (referencing the 1974 911 Targa, and the Nürburgring world record time held by the Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo prototype). #cars #advertising #video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b596NIgNFWI
