A number of people in my timeline are playing with coding assistants for the first time recently, I think because of Xcode’s recent integration
There’s a bunch of “damn this thing works surprisingly well, but holy shit is it expensive”
I can’t emphasize enough: if you’re paying out the nose for Anthropic or OpenAI, you really should try OpenRouter. You might be surprised at the results you can get for a fraction of the price. And you can wire most tools up to their API, including Claude Code

RE: @matdevdug@c.im
This really resonates with me. Especially the part about putting the coding assistant to work doing tedious or obnoxious stuff I hate doing
I love having it do stuff I hate, don’t want to learn, or am inclined to procrastinate on. And it usually does a better job than I would at those things
Sometimes it even shows me patterns or tricks I didn’t know about, and then I learn something. In those moments, it’s really earned its keep

RE: @campuscodi@mastodon.social
I just ordered 4 NAS HDDs since I'm going to need to upgrade my current ones at some point this year
Both Amazon and Newegg capped the maximum order (Amazon: 3, Newegg: 2) so I ended up ordering from both

@arstechnica@mastodon.social continues to be one of my favorite sources of science and technology news. I’ve been subscribing for years. Good to see this sort of humility when they screw up. We’re all human

Possibly unpopular opinion: email is a shitty medium for newsletters. Or for any long form reading really
I think the main reason email newsletters are so popular is because the web is *so much worse*

When you’re too creepy even for Ring, it’s time to rethink some life choices. Your mother would not be proud

Comparing OpenAI’s usage limits to Apple Creator Studio usage limits @gruber@mastodon.social says “something feels off here”
One of the things that feels off is OpenAI is losing astronomical amounts of money on everything they do. Every time you use one of their services they lose money. When you tell ChatGPT “thank you” they lose money. OpenAI is not in the business of making money. They’re in the business of getting people to use their service regardless of the cost to OpenAI
Apple otoh is very much in the business of making money. They most definitely are not in the business of losing money for every mediocre slide deck you build
Maybe the question is whether these features are ones Apple should have shipped if they weren’t in a state that could be profitable

Evidently even Setapp has abandoned passwords in favor of emailing you a secret
This is high friction for the user and it breaks password manager workflows everywhere it’s used. And it's spreading like a fucking virus
If you want to get rid of passwords, fine! But use passkeys instead of goddamn email magic

The number of times I've accidentally called someone from my mac when I was trying to select & copy/paste a number from my address book is fucking ridiculous
