I've known #distrobox for quite a while and used it casually go get things on my system and liked it a lot. Well since I started doing #development in my free time I came to rely on this tool a lot! It gives me such freedom and ease of mind, I love it! Previously I would install #ArchLinux to get the newest dependencies & goodies. After a while I either mess things up or I switch stack, tech or something else, so I used to wipe all & install from scratch for the next "project". Now I just use #debian as a host and get all the sdk's, ide's and all stuff related in an arch container. Then export what I need.

Unfortunately, my experiment with CachyOS is over, even though I gave the system a fair chance this time. First of all, I really liked CachyOS. The speed is phenomenal, and everything would have been perfect except for one tiny detail that is essential for me: Localsend didn't work. And I couldn't figure out why. I was able to install the program easily, and my computer recognized all the devices around it. Except for the devices around my computer with CachyOS on it... and it was also not possible to send files from the computer to the recognized devices or mark them as favorites. Not even a firewall was activated or anything else in the network settings as usual. With all the other distributions I usually use—Fedora, Debian, OpenSUSE, Zorin OS, FreeBSD, even a “real” Arch—there are no problems at all. And since I'm constantly sending files and photos back and forth between my smartphone and computers and don't want to be constantly plugging and unplugging cables, CachyOS is not for my everyday use. I find that very unfortunate. But it's usually little things like this that make you less happy with a distribution or Linux in general than others might be. 😧 #linux #unix #opensource #freesoftware #cachyos #fedora #debian #zorinos #arch #archlinux #freebsd #localsend

@serigala_tropis@lgbtqia.space yes, #archlinux is great and I appreciate their wiki as the most clean, complete and solid documentation, source of references even for other distro users. But it doesn't suit to be a distro for my workstations and servers.

@serigala_tropis@lgbtqia.space that's the point. Just like what @torvalds@social.kernel.org said about why he choose fedora, he doesn't care about distros, just need a distro that works. I can not accept my workstation broken after an update and I'm in hurry situation to do some works. That's why I don't choose #archlinux. For rolling release, I think #tumbleweed from #opensuse is much more stable than arch. I've used it to run some stuffs.

@cks@mastodon.social OpenWatcom vi is source available. https://mastodonapp.uk/@JdeBP/116052015020764901 Ritter's Heirloom #vi is in #FreeBSD ports today, coming from the same place that it has for a long time. https://freshports.org/editors/2bsd-vi/ It was dropped from #ArchLinux because it did not compile and hadn't changed in 20 years. Ironically, this is because the (GNU) C language had changed, and it has to nowadays be compiled forcing an older GNU C language version. https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=2285124#p2285124 Several people have independently discovered the Makefile patch that gets it to build on #Debian and the like. https://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?p=629775 https://gist.github.com/cwfoo/01abac5c39f398b7e7b16a2b87aa518b #elvis, the precursor to #nvi, is packaged for both #NetBSD/#pkgsrc and #OpenBSD. https://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/pkgsrc/current/pkgsrc/editors/elvis/index.html https://github.com/openbsd/ports/tree/master/editors/elvis #retrocomputing #ComputerHistory #Watcom #OpenWatcom

@davefischer@hachyderm.io I'm guessing that that was Ritter's Heirloom vi. https://mastodonapp.uk/@JdeBP/116052015020764901 There are discussions in an Arch Linux forum of its package being removed because it hadn't changed in two decades and the (GNU flavoured) C language had. It's in the #FreeBSD ports collection; and several people have independently come up with the Makefile patch that gets it to build on Debian Linux. https://freshports.org/editors/2bsd-vi/ #vi #retrocomputing #ComputerHistory #gcc #ArchLinux

Yesterday, yt-dlp started failing when downloading and automatically extracting audio to mp3. sudo pacman -Syu yt-dlp updated and working again. Arch is awesome. It took less than 24 hours to get the program update. By the way, Google: screw you and your updates to "improve" YT. #archlinux

Okay, next big thing: get `svt-av1-psyex` packaged up for installation on Arch Linux. Figured the easiest way would be to grab the PKGBUILD for `svt-av1-psy-git` and tweak as necessary. Also, need to add Dolby Vision and HDR10+ support because reasons. #archlinux #svtav1 #pkgbuild
