Marketwatch this morning report that overnight's reversal - a stunning leap in oil prices followed by a dramatic drop to merely a significant rise in oil prices - was in fact triggered by reminders of strategic oil reserves held across the G7, which led immediately to talk of _releases_ of oil by those reserves, even though none have been announced. And that stemmed the panic. For context, check earlier in this thread, or for more context, here's a five-day chart. Actual price in oil hit just short of $120/barrel at $119.48 before people got some talking to. #economics #economy #oil #OilPrice

_Discussions_, apparently. Or a global recession play. Don't know. Or Asian markets locking in as much supply as they can and getting done making certain guarantees. Persian Gulf goes lots of places but a _lot_ of it goes to eastern Asia. I'm looking for news to trigger this reversal but not seeing it. #economics #economy #oil #OilPrice

@david@fouroclockfarms.club It's been bouncing off $116 for a while, either somebody (possibly private) with storage is taking profits or somebody (probably governmental) with storage is buffering the rise. #economics #oil #OilPrice #economy

Y'know, people were talking about $125 a barrel within a week, I wasn't ruling it out but I didn't think we'd be queueing up for it on Monday morning #economics #oil #OilPrice #economy #FuckTrump #war

A sane US president would be talking about strategic reserve releases _tonight_. But if Shitstain were sane, and if the Republican Party was sane, we wouldn't fucking be here, now would we? #economics

Two items to note aftermarket Friday: the VIX and the RSI. It's a good thing (for the markets) that his is a Friday, because while VIX in the 30s is _not_ a panic number, it _is_ climbing into sight of panic number territory. And the RSI of the oil market, well. Of course, all of this is irretrievably interwoven into whatever new batshit insanity news happens this weekend, so. #us #unitedstates #economy #economics #trading #iran #war #news #morons #fools #lunatics #FuckTrump #trump #FuckMAGA

Imagine a world, in which the aim is to make it a better place and not to make money. If we want a better world, we will need to think about an appropriate incentive system. #economy #economics #Democracy #capitalism https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/mar/06/tory-peer-lord-chadlington-leave-house-of-lords-covid-ppe-deals

Does this make sense? A company prioritises profit over the functioning of the service that it sells. If it is fined, the fines will eventually be paid by the customers, who already suffer from the poor service. This may be an area, in which privatisation does not work? #economy #economics #capitalism https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c3v77yzn5gxo

The Impact of Dollar Dependency: Why Countries Struggle with USD Dominance 💸🌍 The reliance of many countries on the US dollar has far-reaching consequences for global economics and politics. Here’s how it shapes economies—and why it’s a double-edged sword: 1. Economic Instability: Currency fluctuations can trigger inflation, higher import costs, and increased debt burdens. 2. Financial Dependence: Countries borrowing in dollars face higher costs when their local currency weakens. 3. Geopolitical Risks: The US can leverage the dollar for sanctions, limiting access to global markets. 4. Trade Limitations: Dollarized trade can create extra costs and risks, especially for nations with unstable currencies. 5. Loss of Sovereignty: Economic policies may need to align with US interests, reducing independence. Some countries are pushing for dedollarization, exploring alternatives like the euro, yuan, or regional payment systems. Is this the future of global finance? 🤔 #Economics #GlobalTrade #USD #DollarDependency #Dedollarization #Geopolitics #Finance #EconomicPolicy

Yup. In the short term markets are about as rational as that bearded guy in a bathrobe shuffling around in his slippers under the freeway underpass shouting at imaginary greebles. Reminder: In the long run irrational stuff ends up getting washed out of markets as it gets out-competed, thus the "rational markets hypothesis". But in the long run we're all dead. #economics

So far Brexit looks to have cost the UK between 4-6% GDP per capita, with the negative impact continuing to compound as GDP growth remains weak compared to similar countries. This chart should be shown each time Nigel Farage tries to make out its been a success (or if not, its not his fault). Brexit was clearly his project, its clearly cost the UK dear (in economic terms) & he should be reminded of this fact continually & publicly #Brexit #economics h/t Adam Tooze
