Every year I mark when the first daffodils open up. This year, flowers just started opening up yesterday (15 March) amid temperatures in the mid 70s F/25 C, when this photograph was taken. Temperatures are falling all day today, with cold winds and the occasional shower. As I type, the mercury is now below 40F/4C, on its way to 20F/-7C. So I do not expect to many more buds to open up in the next few days, at least not until temperatures get back up over 50F/10C again on Thursday. BTW, last year, the daffodils started blooming on 20 March. #garden #gardening #daffodils #spring

Put a new plant in this morning to cover a bare bit of wall eventually. A ceanothus. It’s a lemon and lime variety so the leaves are funky variegated. #gardening #plant #flower #photography

I'll be occupying my time during the upcoming summer break from work with a bit of gardening - a large maple tree was just taken down at the rear of the property leaving a huge stump and some torn up de-landscaped area around it. I have several types of peppers and tomatoes as well as broccoli waiting to be moved outdoors ---- And lots and lots of mushroom liquid cultures in an ever growing collection. What's odd is that I can't find any kind of USDA climate zone table for mushrooms. I know shiitake will grow here happily, and I know that lions main should be fine. Less sure about wine-caps and Agaricus Bisporus. I *think* if I get them established in the soil they should persist here in zone 5b, but can't find any actual reference to consult. I've got four different oyster mushroom types to try - no clue if any will make a re-appearance next year once established. That seems strange, but then mushroom cultivation in general beyond agaricus is actually pretty new. I remember reading books as a kid from the 40's, 50's, and maybe even early 60's that referred to "the cultivated mushroom" and there was literally only one cultivated mushroom species at the time, at least in the western world. #mycology #mushrooms #gardening #madisonwi

Put a small code frame together so can now free up some space for more seeds in the coding shed 😊🌱 #gardening #shedlife

RE: https://toad.social/@Michigander/116187282117437602 Something I love about feeling the rotation of the earth on here is seasonal change. Snow melt, blossom, snowdrops and daffodils coming up there, as we are pruning salvias, taking down tomato plants, gathering leaves and popping in bulbs for next spring. Longer days, shorter days, round and round. Feeling the earth surely must make us more careful with the planet. #gardening

Something I love about the fedi is that you feel the rotation of the earth. I wake up at 5 am and my feed is filled with realtime chatter from my European mutuals, not filled with random algorithmic schlock from times and places unknown.

I’m quite pleased with the way the front lawn is starting to look. Tete-a-tete daffs, muscari and crocus all coming through nicely. #gardening #flowers #spring

Ok #Flower #Gardeners, I have some mixed Crocus bulbs that are still "fresh" but have been in the fridge staying cold for a few months. What are the odds if I put them in the some pots they will bloom this year? #Blooms #GardeningMastodon #Garden #Gardening Any advise?

This morning we went out to buy a new handheld hoover, but came home with a hearth rug and lots of plants instead! Mark really shouldn't leave me unattended in the gardening section of B&Q. (Add that to the list of shops I'm not allowed to visit without supervision.) And as we're busy all weekend, I've spent this afternoon planting them - not ideal as the soil is cold and damp and claggy, but looking forward to seeing them grow. #gardening

From my garden... The tall flowers are phlox and shorties are day lilies. The pic was taken early in the morning just as the sun was rising. The colors are very intense. #bloomscrolling #nature #plants #garden #gardening

Last night well after sunset I got the temporary modular fence installed to protect the #CrocusLawn #BulbLawn from the rabbits. The holes are too big, I’ll fix that with chicken wire backing. Seems to have had a bit of deterrent last night. Third photo is another crocus lawn in our neighborhood I spotted today. Crazy how far behind first years are from established. Same thing happened at the old place. #KC #Missouri #Crocus #Gardening #Zone6B

Last night the rabbits went to town on our #CrocusLawn. I thought things looked off this morning, but brushed it off. It's been nagging on me all day so I did a screenshot comparison from our security cameras... Nothing less than a massacre. An army of pests creeping in the night doing their dirty deeds. Crocus aren't native. And we Naturalists like to say, if something's not eating your stuff, then it's not part of the ecosystem. But I'm not willing to sacrifice 100% to feed an insatiable overpopulation w/ little predator pressure here in the 'burbs. This means war. #BulbLawn #KC #Missouri #Crocus #Gardening #Zone6B

Having had a couple of nice days of spring, today has been back to the ubiquitous rain. Took my mid afternoon leg stretch as a stroll around the garden. So nice to see a camellia I planted a couple of years ago full of flower buds. Also a surprise clump of crocuses. The snowdrops are still going strong under the apple tree, and the earliest of the primroses are proving their hardiness. #gardening
