Hungary's new government is to review the country's €16 billion Security Action for Europe (SAFE) defence plan, citing corruption risks. Outgoing Prime Minister Viktor Orbán submitted a request for a low-interest loan to the European Commission last year under SAFE, which will distribute €150 billion among 19 member states for military readiness across the bloc. However incoming Prime Minister Péter Magyar and his team have asked to reassess the plan based on possible ties to Hungarian industrial interests associated with Orbán. The prompt abandonment of Viktor Orbán but the global Right & their quick shift to 'supporting' Péter Magyar after the Hungarian elections tells us two (contrasting) things:
There is little loyalty in the New Right; whoever it looks contingent to support gets it with little looking in the rearview mirror;
But equally the Right may be also confident that Péter Magyar is one of their won in any case....
