Have been working here today, such a fab spot. Plenty of space. And you don’t have to get there at the crack of the dawn to get a desk like the British Library too. It’s now got its own subway as well! #Melbourne #libraries #statelibraryvic #Australia #work

Floppy disks were introduced in the early 1970s and in the two decades before they became obsolete, tens of billions were produced, most of which ended up in landfills, long-forgotten storage, or libraries. Archivist Leontien Talboom has been working for the past few years to preserve the floppy disks in the Cambridge University Library, collaborating with retro-computing enthusiasts. She talked to @PopularScience@flipboard.com about the project. https://flip.it/Hg8Swi #Technology #Tech #RetroComputing #LIbraries

#University #Libraries I'm psyched about access to the local university library. UMaryland-College Park has greatly reduced costs for geezers who apply to fill unclaimed seats. Today I was able to find and legally download the full text of the 2009 English translation of Dialogues of Love, written by Abravanel, a.k.a. Leone Ebreo, in 1535. Here's Renaissance discourse,, admixed with a Sephardic perspective. Imagine meeting such a mind. Later, I was able to determine that the answers I sought to make UL943's new threshold specifications safer might be had. (I just withdrew a proposal, not having the biomedical engineering savvy, nor access to source data, to intelligently harmonize conflicting numbers.) I learned of a 2025 article in Health Physics, which I'll look up Monday, if the university's libraries are open. All this, and I'll sit down for my first-ever poetry class, with a highly engaged instructor. Psyched!.

Got someone who works in libraries trying to tell me we should be neutral and not political. The act of choosing to represent many voices and not just the voice of the dominant culture is not neutral. It is deeply political. People who don’t see what libraries do as being deeply political are privileged people who don’t see that EVERYTHING is political. They don’t see that politics affects every part of life because they are privileged enough to be insulated. Their privilege is that whichever way the political wind blows, they will probably be ok. #Libraries #Librarian
