Africa gave us people. But more than that, Africa gave us 'shrooms https://phys.org/news/2026-03-african-species-evolutionary-magic-mushrooms.html?utm_source=fark&utm_medium=website&utm_content=link&utm_campaign=fark&ICID=ref_fark #stem #science #biology #evolution #ecology #mushrooms #spiffy

I'll be occupying my time during the upcoming summer break from work with a bit of gardening - a large maple tree was just taken down at the rear of the property leaving a huge stump and some torn up de-landscaped area around it. I have several types of peppers and tomatoes as well as broccoli waiting to be moved outdoors ---- And lots and lots of mushroom liquid cultures in an ever growing collection. What's odd is that I can't find any kind of USDA climate zone table for mushrooms. I know shiitake will grow here happily, and I know that lions main should be fine. Less sure about wine-caps and Agaricus Bisporus. I *think* if I get them established in the soil they should persist here in zone 5b, but can't find any actual reference to consult. I've got four different oyster mushroom types to try - no clue if any will make a re-appearance next year once established. That seems strange, but then mushroom cultivation in general beyond agaricus is actually pretty new. I remember reading books as a kid from the 40's, 50's, and maybe even early 60's that referred to "the cultivated mushroom" and there was literally only one cultivated mushroom species at the time, at least in the western world. #mycology #mushrooms #gardening #madisonwi

Cyptotrama asprata, commonly known as the golden-scruffy collybia or spiny woodknight, is a species of mushroom found worldwide. Known for its fuzzy, almost alien appearance, when young, the cap is covered in dense, stiff tufts of fibrils that look like small, sharp spikes which wash off when it matures. It is found worldwide but absent in Europe and Northwestern North America. #weird #fungi #mushrooms #nature

I've suddenly found a whole new kingdom of life to obsess about growing. I've now got an absurd collection of #mushroom cultivation supplies coming from Amazon. All because a fungus added itself to my little mound planting, colonizing the whole hill from top to bottom all the way around, is loving life, and is clearly not bothering the plants one bit. So I'll pasteurize the soil and bark for the next mound and stuff in a bunch of spawn for oysters or shiitake or both and hopefully they can persist for a few years and be coaxed into fruiting with sufficient watering and appropriate temperatures. every so often. #houseplants #mushrooms
