You don’t get to invoke a goddess of justice, protection, and liminality while turning away from real people being harmed at the thresholds of this country. Magic that does not confront oppression seems pointless to me. Devotion that refuses accountability is basically lip service. Hekate asks us to be honest with ourselves even when it’s uncomfortable, and sometimes that honesty looks like saying: this system is wrong, and I will not sanctify it. I will not look away! John Cowper Powys was a highly eccentric British writer, whose extremely long novels explored folklore, landscape and mythology. Though some were set in the South West of England, Powys later reinvented himself as a kind of wizard Welshman. His magnum opus, Porius, is around 1000 pages long and features Merlin, King Arthur, the bard Taliessin, Neanderthal giants, the cult of Mithras, and an alchemical child. Two accounts of bilocation (being in two places simultaneously) are associated with Powys. In one incident, he promised to appear to a friend at precisely two o'clock the following day. At the appointed time, the friend looked up and saw Powys before his image slowly faded. The other account involved him appearing at a hotel to a nephew who had annoyed him, bursting through some doors and shouting "No tea! No tea!" The young crescent moon occulted Mercury today...as seen from the mountains of southern New Mexico. First photo is a telephoto shot of the moon only a minute after it uncovered our innermost planet. This was taken in bright twilight as a wind and dust storm was easing up. Second photo is a wider angle shot ten minutes later that includes Venus in the bottom third of the frame.
