Rio Rancho is a fairly large city, but some city council seats were uncontested?

A very full moon rises on March 2nd as the sun sets.
In about 9 hours the moon will be totally eclipsed.
For New Mexico maximum eclipse will be around 4:30AM, but totality lasts for about one hour. Set your alarm and think 'clear skies'.

I have a Sony NEX-5, and I use Darktable to open it's raw/.arw format images into GIMP. I certainly don't use all the possibilities of GIMP.
If you save your images as .jpg, you lose some of the dynamic range that is helpful in tough lighting situations.
(Later, I got two Sony a6300 bodies. The low noise performance is better for astrophotography, and one of them is modded with all the filters in front of the sensor removed...so the silicon chip can see visible, near IR and a bit of near UV...so then I slap on the desired bandpass filter. With the RGB filter array gone, it's a monochrome camera, and in my analog days I enjoyed black and white photography.)

I will try to get photos of the rising moon tomorrow, March 2nd. Just as the moon will rise tomorrow, the sun will be just 1 degree above the horizon. The sunlight will illuminate the foreground for a balanced photo.
On March 3rd the moon will rise after the sun has set. The moon will be bright, and the foreground will be very dark...silhouettes in any photo. That will make photos very different compared to 24 hours earlier.

We have a long way to climb out of this hole.
A woman who spent over a quarter century in Singapore told me that in their school system, aptitude/IQ tests were used on students at a very early stage in their schooling...to identify those who are gifted/"have it"...and those students were fast-tracked to get better/elite education to prepare them to manage/govern the nation, be heads of various organizations, etc.
I suppose that's one way to address this situation, but it's far from egalitarian.

Three planets in the evening sky, as seen from the mountains of southern New Mexico. (Evening of 21 February.)
See the 2nd graphic for a finder chart from planetarium sky simulation software.
These three planets are very different in brightness, but the differences in sky background surrounding each planet ends up making them all appear roughly the same brightness in the photo. Venus is brightest, followed by Mercury, with Saturn the faintest of the three.

The young crescent moon occulted Mercury today...as seen from the mountains of southern New Mexico.
First photo is a telephoto shot of the moon only a minute after it uncovered our innermost planet. This was taken in bright twilight as a wind and dust storm was easing up.
Second photo is a wider angle shot ten minutes later that includes Venus in the bottom third of the frame. The evening twilight sky colors are pallid because of the dust storm clouds billowing a mile below me on the floor of the Tularosa basin.

Name suffixes - a mark of the patriarchy.
This is a summary table of a registered voter list for a county in New Mexico (United States). The occurrence count of various name suffixes is further broken down by gender.
I have no idea how this may compare to name suffixes in other countries, other cultures.
This is not a scientific study. There are all sorts of problems, such as selection bias.
But the difference in occurrence between men and women is huge.

Mercury and Venus in the evening sky, as seen from the mountains of southern New Mexico.
Mercury is high enough that it stands in the dark blue twilight sky.
Venus is still down low in the bright orange band, close to distant trees.
The first photo was taken with an 85mm lens (APS-C sensor). The second photo was taken 10 minutes later, just before Venus set, and used a 135mm lens.
Minute by minute, the twilight sky changes so much in brightness, colors, and saturation.
Here is a photo from four evenings ago when both planets were closer to the sun and nestled in even brighter twilight:

Farmers may protest in different ways compared to urban folks.
I remember hearing of a protest action in my county by unhappy volunteer firefighters from various rural fire departments.
They didn't stand along main street, carry signs, and sing protest songs. (That's what hippies do.) They drove their fire engines/tankers/ladder trucks...surrounded City Hall...took the keys out of the ignition and threw them in the face of the local emergency response manager.
Almost 50 years ago....

I attended the first two. I asked a question or two. After the meetings, I met new folks, got contact info, made appointments to talk with the mayor and in a separate meeting the city manager.
A generous assessment would be that the forums were sparsely attended. I walked away from them frowning, concerned...how do we further boost civic engagement?
A month later I spoke with Chris, the organizer/facilitator of the forums and I mentioned my concerns about the meagre audience size.
That's when he told me something potentially significant.
He also posted a recording of the forum livestream on various social media video platforms for folks to look at later. Several weeks later he made note of the view totals from all the video platforms: 3,000 views?!
The population of Alamogordo city limits is a bit over 30,000...population of Otero county is about 70,000.
It may not be ideal, but maybe we can build civic engagement through virtual/asynchronous attendance?
This deserves further study, then tweak action plans and move forward.

Like we say in the military: no plan of action survives first contact with the enemy.

This is from Thurs afternoon, a quarter-mile from my house. They are still replacing snapped utility poles even today.
But my Internet has held up, knock on wood. In a pinch I can get a faint cell phone signal if I stand outside on the deck at just the right spot.
If power is restored before I go to sleep, I can have a hot shower. Woo hoo!

Yes. We suffered the winter storm (they name them now? First letter is F?) last week. Snow fell on the basin floor.
I'm in the high mountains. I've been on generator power for six days. It's a war zone up here.
