I'm kind of surprised by the Frecciarossa being the most expensive last-minute at €125 (and just barely short of the AVE at a month out at ~€68 - I guess affordable AVE tickets sell out earlier?)

Okay, so the methodology for the core price comparison (this is meant to show the wisdom of Open Access, is it) is that they took the one of the most important domestic routes in each country, looked at the highest-category trains, on midweek Tuesday-Thursday dates in November-mid-December, between 8 and 10 AM. They compared prices 30 days ahead (Polish booking horizon yay) and 1 day ahead, in 2nd class or whatever equivalent could be found, non-refundable where that was an option, converted to Euros.
Now, the choice of routes is… kinda interesting. (trains divided as in original report)
PL - EIP Warsaw-Kraków (who would've guessed - please keep in mind that those are significantly more expensive than other trains in Poland)
High-speed:
FR - TGV InOui Paris-Marseille
ES - AVE Madrid-Barcelona
IT - FR Rome-Milan
SE - Snabbtåg Stockholm-Gothenburg
TR - YHT Ankara-İstanbul
Non-high-speed:
DE - ICE Berlin-Hamburg (how much are you willing to bet they picked this one specifically to avoid what high-speed rail Germany does have?)
CH - IC Zurich-Geneva
FI - IC Helsinki-Tampere
HU - IC Budapest-Debrecen
GB - London-Birmigham (I'm not going to call it an IC like they do)
AT - EC Vienna-Graz (predates Koralmbahn)
CZ - EC Prague-Brno (so in these two cases they've clearly opted to avoid routes with developed open access competition… But not in Spain or Sweden?)

#PKPIC planning to double Kraków-Bielsko-Biała ICs to 8 pairs in 2 hour Takt from 2026/7 timetable, travel time down to 1h10m, 3 pairs running through to Żywiec. This route probably looks weird to German (why is this not an RE?) and French (What is this weird not-TGV not-TER thing?) eyes, but it makes a lot of sense in our weird organization of passenger rail!

@bovine3dom@masto.ai Also, judging from the border points listed in the timetable (with no passenger service) it looks like it takes a route via Brașov or thereabouts, with crossings in Albița, Nagylak, Rajka, Břeclav. It's a daily (well, nightly) service that goes to Liberec 4 days out of 7, and either on one day service is run with two coaches, one from each company, or there's something weirder in the data

@bovine3dom@masto.ai Ah, that. Well, looks like it does, weirdly, although it's possible the departure time is given in CET and not EET as it should. Looks like the route is jointly run by two Moldovan companies using a Czech intermediary to handle their obligations there?

Norway is best in that it provides not just data, but also open sources the tools they make and probably the best NetEx docs you don't have to pay standardization comittee ransom for. Other than that, in Western and Northern Europe it's probably not a problem except for a few signups and missing private operators, I think? East and south-east, though, a good bunch of places work only because volunteers put in the work of jumping through a bunch of hoops and republished the data, sometimes, like with Polish rail, having to convert it from proprietary formats used internally, from what I heard. You can look in the 'feeds' folder of the Transitous repo on GitHub to see where they are gathering data from

This is a complicated format, so voluntarily providing GTFS is also common (rarely this is done instead of NetEx which is technically wrong, but works for most people). But some still have nothing, almost a decade later. The current government in Poland said something about getting around to making a proper NAP and national trip planner, but I haven't heard of any actual progress on that. In Italy for a while, only regional feeds comprising PSO services were available, recently a Trenitalia feed including commercial stuff was added and included in Transitous, but Italo is still missing as far as I know, for another example

Chwila żałoby. Twórca biblioteki krytycznej w procesie renderowania tekstu w wielu systemach pisma dał się wciągnąć głęboko w dziurę "AI za ciebie napisze" - HarfBuzz jest praktycznie wymagany przez jakiekolwiek wolne oprogramowanie do GUI i nie ma jak tego zapiaskownicować, wyciąć, ani nic :(

@wrzlbrnft@troet.cafe Japanese Wikipedia says these trains are equipped with seiriken dispensers, maybe you're supposed to to the bus thing - take a ticket when boarding and pay when getting off if using a normal single?
Funnily enough, the page also says you are allowed to travel from Sannohe (or any other station in-between) to Hachinohe without paying for the purpose of buying a ticket at the staffed counter

@wrzlbrnft@troet.cafe My guess is that adding the adjective ending -i makes the name sound cuter and less boring than just using the name of the prefecture, which means "blue/green forest" (green was historically considered a shade of blue in the CJK sphere - green traffic lights are still called blue in Japan to this day, for example) - with the -i it spells out Blue Forest in a more literal sense, hence the blue livery, logo with cutesy blue trees growing out of the train and such

Doing so by following roughly the same route as Oliver (slightly Hafas-assisted to figure out when's the best ICE south, I'll admit) but changing in Győr to an express bus bound for Pécs, which gets you to Székesfehérvár in time for the previous bihourly train along the northen shore of the Balaton. Also decided I could use more certainty with the Kraków-bound FlixBus, so took Metro+S-tog from the airport
Don't think we're beating the car here, though:

@wrzlbrnft@troet.cafe The route as depicted (note that that was 25 years ago) is Tōkyō->Kawasaki->Shitte->Hama-Kawasaki->Tsurumi->Chigasaki->Hashimoto->Hachiōji->Takasaki->Oyama->Tomobe->Abiko->Narita->Chiba->Soga->Hatchōbori.
A significantly longer route is possible these days (the area is continually expanding to match the Suica expansion), and the rule states it is technically not required to complete the trip on the same day, but I don't think you'd be allowed to overnight within the ticket area… Japanese Wikipedia states such overnight trips are usually taken on New Year's Eve when trains run on special all-night schedules

@wrzlbrnft@troet.cafe Well, it helps that I happen to know the name already - the line forms part of the "Itto Rokken Ōmawari", as depicted in the second chapter/episode of the manga/anime Tetsuko no Tabi. The Ōmawari is a mad endurance trip exploiting the so-called "Daitoshi Kinkō kukan" tariff rules, allowing JR tickets between stations within certain metropolitan areas to be used with any route, as long as you stay within the area (those generally do not include Shinkansen, aside from two exceptions around Ōsaka, but the spirit of challenge is to avoid buying the necessary supplements anyway), do not break the journey at any point (the endurance part is because you have to make do with the facilities available inside the ticket gates) and do not double-back (you may only pass each station once). The Tōkyō area for the purposes of this rule is gigantic, covering pretty much all of the surrounding prefectures and reaching out all the way to Nagano on the conventional line.
This lets you travel something to the tune of 450+ km on the shortest single ticket
