Surely that is well in the past and if they want any future gas they will be keen to invest. After all they do in other parts of the world where people are less gullible.

@feather1952 there aren’t a lot of politicians that can claim the battler mantle. Bob Hawke may have been the last though he was more a larrikin. Pauline has had a large senator’s stipend for years and gets a pension when she’s done. Not your average battler.

@pzmyers I loved the book not because of the science but because of the development of the hero/antihero character development and the concepts of how a planet could come together to create a Hail Mary project. If you get too wrapped up in facts and the state of current knowledge then all science fiction and fantasy is terrible.

@Globob people are always rethinking how store solar energy. Pumped hydro, heat banks, hydrogen production, batteries etc. are all in train. Really, I wouldn’t worry about some residual gas power at the moment as we are still in transition. Innovation has a way of fixing things.

Australia needs to produce hydrogen for fertiliser as well as green steel . Both are government policy.

@Globob the Australian grid is increasing renewable energy based with solar, wind, batteries and hydro. So if there is a shortfall today then it will disappear in the near future. The other thing is that electric vehicles are still a lot less carbon intensive than ICE vehicles even when charging off a fossil fuel based grid.

@libreoffice Libreoffice not a hard move for home use, I’ve used it for years and my wife converted a couple of years ago. The only sticking point is occasionally sending attachments without saving them as .docx etc. Not a biggy but if Microslop and other vendors have to accept off then all is better!

A side note, once Libreoffice was accepted at home then the move to Linux was an easier sell. After all it’s the office apps that lock people into Windows.

@ids1024 I had forgotten about that - so long ago. According to Wikipedia it was 1966, which shows nothing of substance has really changed in the computing industry. LLMs are giving emotional support to people who are suicidal, people are confiding in them and it’s all a sham. From an AI perspective, it looks like a very expensive dead end.

@benlockwood the mayor or the Sydney City Council cut the central city golf (Moore Park) in half to make the area usable for other recreational activities.

I also find being stuck with people who watch golf on TV a trial.

@kathhayhoe there are many examples of companies that have ignored changing markets and doubled down on a dying product or technology. It always ends badly. I suspect it a combination of a lack of imagination and timidness or maybe pigheadedness that blinds them to the risks.

@bencourtice they do say that but like a lot of these things, it’s hard to say how accurate it is. Certainly the EV charging scenario gives the early mover a way to increase their income streams.

I was looking to charge the EV in Goulburn and the Chargefox chargers met my needs. What is interesting is the 20 odd Tesla chargers located adjacent to the Chargefox. The place was really pumping electrons as EVs were coming and going big time. It crossed my mind that if an area can snag a number of chargers then they are set as the drivers have ~20-30 minutes available to spend on coffee, etc. A great draw card and one most of us don’t realise how important it is, especially in a country town.
