Pictured here are barrels kept outside where some of the fortified (16%) wine is stored for a year, without topping. This is to simulate ship transport (part of this is that salt from the Mediterranean Sea makes its way to the barrels). In hot weather they are sprayed with water to keep the wood from drying out.

Interest in installing solar panels in vineyards is growing. Here's a paper from Australia that examines their impact on pear trees & fruit.

tl/dr Panels created shade, which reduced yield, sugar concentration & color, but lessened impacts of extreme weather (heat and hail).

This study used fixed panels at 45° and 5°, with the latter causing greater crop losses, but power production was similar.

I'm scanning my Dad's old slides and came across some he took of Richard Smart doing Concord grapevine canopy measurements in 1974 (probably in Hector, NY).

At this time he was at Cornell University studying his PhD under Nelson Shaulis, gaining experience that would lead to publication of Sunlight into Wine, the preeminent book on grapevine canopy management.

Richard passed away last July.

The original seedling tree that bears the Bramley apple is not formally recognised as having significance, and a new owner of the property could cut it down.

There are efforts to raise the money needed to buy the property from Nottingham Trent University and secure its future.
