"I thought it would set us back 50 years if I didn't win." — Billie Jean King She walked in knowing the weight wasn't just hers — it belonged to every woman told she wasn't enough. Showing up isn't about fearlessness. It's knowing the cost of sitting down is worse than standing. Today the court is a Senate chamber, a prison medical office, a registration line — but the game is the same. #trans #queer #lgbtqia #news #liberal #progressive #nonfiction #history #culture https://thistleandmoss.com/p/the-daily-exhale-if-we-won-the-war-in-iran-why-are-we-still-fight

What Wendy's Doing: Trump said we won the war in Iran on day one. If that is true, why the fuck is the US escorting ships through the Straight of Hormuz? So Fuck it. I Cried. Got angry. Wrote this. https://traffic.libsyn.com/yinhistory/EP127-Iran_Part_2.mp3 The Shah of Iran initiated the White Revolution in 1963, which aimed to modernize Iran through land reform, women's suffrage, literacy programs, and industrial growth. While it brought economic growth, it also caused social disruption and increased opposition, contributing to the 1979 Islamic Revolution #history #Iran

Some feel the Isle of Man is named after Manannan, a sea god who protected the island by cloaking it in mist. The name may, however, come from a Celtic word meaning 'mountain island' and the god may have been named after the island rather than the other way around. From Man's highest point, it's said that on a clear day you can see 7 kingdoms - England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland & Man, plus the Kingdom of the Sea & Kingdom of Heaven. #FolkloreSunday #folklore #mythology #history #weird

New preprint! Global inequality is on the rise, and so is global catastrophic risk. These two problems are not independent: inequality drives societal instability and increases catastrophic risk. We show this by drawing on historical and empirical research highlighting the corrosive effects of inequality. The danger comes via two pathways: 1) inequality erodes trust and information sharing, making collective action much harder; 2) inequality is especially damaging to democracies, which are our best bet for surviving future hazards. This means, if we want a society more resilient to global catastrophic risk, we need more democratic participation and less inequality. See the paper for the full argument: https://eartharxiv.org/repository/view/12164/ #inequality #wealth #GlobalCatastrophicRisk #History

The Fn key arrived on computer keyboards in 1984 with IBM's PCjr — Fn stood for "function," since you would press it before other keys to modify their function. The PCJr didn't last, but the Fn key did, though its position and purpose shifted around. For his Unsung blog, @mwichary@mastodon.online writes about the history of the Fn key, and what the heck Apple is doing with it. "Okay, keyboard nerd. Relax. It’s just a modifier key. Why are you so worked up about it? If you don’t like it, don’t use it," he writes. "This matters to me and feels bigger than just Fn, because I know keyboards can help you use your computer in better ways than you might imagine." https://flip.it/CK3MyB #Technology #Tech #Design #Computers #History

Real attempts to deal with 'dangerous corpses' persisted in England long after vampires had been made into literary and theatrical spectacles. Four years after the publication of 'Dracula', a Devon farmer is recorded as saying the coffin of a "troublesome" woman would be buried upside-down so "her can on'y diggy downwards." During World War I, English soldiers are recorded as having buried a "huge, scowling" German facedown for the same reason. #gothic #folklore #mythology #vampire #vampires #death #history #paranormal #weird

She arrived at a peace negotiation and found a mat on the floor where her chair should have been. She sat on an attendant's back instead, conducted the meeting at eye level, and remarked afterward that she didn't use the same chair twice. Then she went home and raised an army. Favourite Stations - Piccadilly Circus Meet Katie, a London Blue Badge tourist guide whose favourite Tube station is Piccadilly Circus. I've started a new branch of the Tube Mapper project exploring people's favourite stations or stops on the London Underground Tube Map. I meet people at their favourite stations, taking photos and interviewing them to find out what makes it so special. The station opened on 10 March 1906, this Zone 1 station is served by the Bakerloo and Piccadilly lines — but for Katie, it’s much more than just a stop on the map. Growing up a little further out of London, she remembers the feeling of stepping out of Piccadilly Circus and instantly knowing she was in the heart of the city. The noise, the lights, the architecture, all the tiny details above your eyeline, create that unmistakable “this is London” moment. Do you have a favourite Tube station? #london #history #photography

Painting of the Last Judgement from Haukipudas Church, Finland, by Mikael Toppelius (1770s). Notice the 'biting corpse' in the lower left-hand corner. Toppelius was known for incorporating folkloric material into his Baroque style and the biting corpse may represent local beliefs in what might be termed 'the restless dead', more commonly known as 'vampires'. This area of Finland may have been influenced by Scandinavian ideas about such revenants. #art #churches #folklore #gothic #weird #vampire #vampires #death #history #Finland #paranormal

Trinity College banned dogs. Byron checked the statutes, found no mention of bears, and installed one. He also kept wolves, monkeys, and a crocodile at home.
