#OnThisDay #2024 Just two years ago, SCOTUS unleashed a madman and a Putin Puppet. Comments from Judge Luttig on the SCOTUS decision ~ “There was no reason in this world for the Supreme Court to take this case. The three judge panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia had written a masterful opinion denying the president’s claims of absolute immunity. Under the constitutional laws of the United States, there has never been an argument that a former president is immune from prosecution for crimes that he committed while in office. On a more practical level, of course, the Supreme Court is capable of deciding this very quickly in time that the former president can be tried before the election. But today’s decision makes that much more unlikely.”

The Grand Canyon was established as a National Park on this day in 1919. Happy Birthday! Photo made from Yavapai Point along the South Rim. #OnThisDay 23 February 2016, Queen Elizabeth II visited the under-construction Bond Street station as Boris Johnson, then Mayor of #London, announced Crossrail would be renamed the Elizabeth line in her honour. Joined by #Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin and senior transport figures, she toured the site and was presented with a commemorative roundel. The railway, later known as the Elizabeth line, was expected to transform travel across London and the South East, supporting thousands of jobs and new homes while boosting the economy. Running from Reading and #Heathrow to Shenfield and Abbey Wood, it was designed to increase rail capacity and carry more than half a million passengers a day when fully open. https://tfl.gov.uk/info-for/media/press-releases/2016/february/crossrail-to-become-the-elizabeth-line-in-honour-of-her-majesty-the-queen

#OnThisDay, 11 Feb 1989, the Rev Barbara Harris is consecrated, the first woman to become a Bishop in the worldwide Anglican Communion. Due to death threats, she was advised to wear a bulletproof vest at the ceremony: she declined. "I certainly don't want to be one of the boys. I want to offer my peculiar gifts as a black woman... a sensitivity and an awareness that comes out of more than a passing acquaintance with oppression." #WomenInHistory #OTD #History #BlackHistoryMonth #Histodons

#OnThisDay, 30 Jan 1913, Ida B Wells forms the Alpha Suffrage Club in Chicago, Illinois, to give a voice to Black women who had been excluded by national suffrage organisations because of their race. In March 1913, the club headed to Washington DC to take part in the national Women’s Suffrage Procession. They were told to march at the back, in a segregated section, so as not to upset white southern women. #WomenInHistory #OTD #History #WomensHistory #AmericanHistory #Histodons 1/2

#OnThisDay, 31 Jan 2013, women in Paris are officially allowed to wear trousers. The 1799 law required women to ask police for permission to "dress as men", or risk being taken into custody. Amendments in 1892 and 1909 were made to allow women to wear trousers if they were holding horse reins or a bicycle handle. The law was widely ignored. Najat Vallaud-Belkacem, France's minister of women's rights, lifted the ban as “incompatible with the principles of equality between women and men”. 1/2
