I actually used to store a KeePass database on a floppy drive. Because it can be taken offline simply by removing the floppy disk. And since it's a floppy disk, you can very clearly HEAR it whenever a

@quad Yeah, you used to be able to hear what a computer was doing and thus know when it next needed attention. First this was the teletype, paper tape reader and paper tape punch. Then it was the floppy disk. Plus there's the printer. Then there was the rattling of the hard disk. But these days of SSDs all you've got to go on is the fan noise - when the fan winds down your build is finished. Despite being such a small cue compared to what we've had before this is still useful! (Yes, I did hear of people back in the day putting a loudspeaker across one of the higher address lines (A14 or whatever) and claiming to be able to tell from the resulting music exactly which bit of code was running.)

@xankarn@mastodon.online If you go on a Myers-Briggs course (other flavours of psychobabble are available) you will be taught that only some people use things like "facts" and "truth" as inputs to their decision making processes.

Other people simply consider these things as irrelevant to their lives.

Fail to recognise this and you lose elections.

An entire article on people not going to restaurants any more, and not a single mention of the reason I don't (covid). https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c0ljpxek5w2o

@cstross@wandering.shop @mort@procial.tchncs.de Yeah, I had one of those with something bought recently. The warranty pamphlet *did* have a QR code which it said would take you to the instruction manual ... but actually it took you to a 404.

If your device needs printed instructions for basic should-be-obvious operations, your user interface design is defective. (This is a Tesla showroom.)

@cstross@wandering.shop That was written by a tech author. Why didn't the tech author not say "I'm not writing that, if those instructions are needed your product is crap"?

@gedeonm@mastodon.social "Lemon tree" isn't really a thing in the UK. I first came across one in Portugal. I was making some G&Ts but ... "I've run out of lemon". "So go out in the garden and pick another one" came the response. Luxury!

@TimWardCam@c.im @petergleick@fediscience.org maybe because of how violently senseless it is. The US NAVI is in international waters, far away from the US, destroying small boats with everyone onboard

@wtrmt@mastodon.social @petergleick@fediscience.org Sure. But the same applies to multiple instances of the USA rampaging round the world killing people over a very long time.
