can any solo indie devs out there who work on tile-based retro systems (gameboy, nes, etc) describe their workflow for me? right now i'm editing art in aseprite, exporting as png, converting to gameboy-format 2bpp to include in the ROM, and hard-coding tile indexes in my program (e.g., here's the list of tile indexes to draw the donut sprite, here's the list of tile indexes to draw the little house...). it's tedious and fragile and there has to be a better way?

the frustrating thing is that literally anyone who has thought about language and technology for fifteen consecutive seconds could have told you that autocomplete and other writing tools influence beliefs (and *have* been telling you this, over and over, for decades). the other frustrating thing is that slop-pushers *brag about their ability to do this* and right-wing actors are actively exploiting it, but in polite company everyone pretends that's not the case @gregeganSF@mathstodon.xyz

i felt like i needed to try it, mostly so i could understand what my students will likely be expected to be able to do when/if they get programming jobs. i used cursor, which i think is the only service offering a free tier that includes access to a CLI code "agent." i ran the agent in the directory of a hobby compiler project and was initially impressed with its ability to summarize the code—until i realized it was parroting my own docs back at me (1/n)

speaking of which, say your software is so bad it breaks the law. on the off chance you do get prosecuted (you won't, not by the feds at least), the punishment will probably be a fine that is less than the amount of monthly revenue you get from people who forgot to cancel their subscription. same for a civil case. there is simply no downside right now to shipping software that sucks, so why *not* generate it stochastically

you know i'd never stopped to consider how annoying tulip mania must have been for folks who just wanted to grow a few pretty flowers in their front garden https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2025/12/after-nearly-30-years-crucial-will-stop-selling-ram-to-consumers/
