#WritersCoffeeClub 16 March: What's the largest cast you've ever written? What made it challenging?
In Child of the Moon, there are four PoV characters, three protagonists and one antagonist. It didn’t seem particularly challenging, but the hard part was that I wanted to write an ending that was significantly, meaningfully different for each of them.

I sometimes discuss my WIP with close friends, but that’s usually in a one-on-one setting, not a group. When my writing is complete I simply hand them a copy (or some like to order their own) and let them read it at their own pace. I don’t mind handing out copies in a group setting 😊

Most will lean towards familiarity, I bet. I’m not afraid to go against the grain though. I’ve found that if I stick to my guns long enough, mainstream eventually catches up with me (again) 😅

While I write, no, it really isn’t. Never have been. But now that I’m not taking any freelance assignments anymore so that I can market my work and start working on the next one, it is becoming somewhat important to me. I still try not to let that influence my WIP though.

I was at a pub in Lewes, asking an elderly lady about the slang they use for the cigarette she was smoking. She said, “sometimes we call them a fag, sometimes a straight.”
It was the kind of answer that you know you might get in trouble with, but hey, if I’m too afraid to relay a story, I wouldn’t be worthy to wield the pen.

They do, but subtly. Generally in summer I find it harder to write, because I want to spend more time outdoors, doing gardening, and going out with friends and family. I feel autumn and winter is when I do the bulk of my writing.

#WritersCoffeeClub 4 March: Share a recent experience where something just “clicked”.
I found a second editor to do the proofreading for #mrsCleyton. When she returned her revision, I felt everything was falling into the right place. Not only had she understood what my novel was trying to say, her suggestions for improvement made sense at a grammatical, stylistic *and* emotional level.
For a story so deeply entrenched in grief, I was humbled to experience it brought tears of joy as well.

#WritersCoffeeClub 1 Mar. What is the fundamental goal you seek to achieve with your current WIP?
With my debut, I always said I wanted to make people pause and think. I kinda held onto that with Mrs. Cleyton, although it morphed into making people feel in a deeply introspective manner. I hadn’t really given much thought to what I want to achieve with the next one though… maybe to move people?
That’s probably gonna backfire on me in some way, but then again, that’s the story of my life 😅

#WritersCoffeeClub 27 Feb: Do you edit while you write? What are the pros and cons?
Yeah, I do. It felt like a necessity to me, because I wrote my novels next to having a day job, so I would often be dropped out of the flow, and re-reading, with editing on the fly, helped me to get back into it.
Only downside I can think of is that maybe I sometimes became too perfectionist over pages that had been edited over and over again. Then again, my editors seemed to appreciate it, because it was less work for them 😅

I’m answering this one for my next WIP, which only has a few pages written so far. There’s no antagonist there, although the protagonist does see a lot of them around her. And she’s kinda cunning in deciding which ones she goes up against.

@joyce@hcommons.social oh, and in my defence, I was born in a fisherman’s village (Katwijk) that used to have a lot of trade with the English. Our dialect is heavily influenced by English as well, even though it gets spoken less and less, and I don’t even live there anymore 😅

I have sorta recently started writing at a standing desk (too much sitting makes Jack a dull boy), and I like to turn on the music while I write. Every now and then I step away from the desk and let the music flow through me and dance and find my groove. Other times, I simply get inspired to do the laundry, because I’m on the attic anyway.

@OEWordhord@mastodon.social I’m reading some — probably etymologically incorrect — associations with Dutch into this 😅
Ongēn (on-yain) looks like the Dutch “ongein”, meaning shenanigans.
Bīgan (bee-gahn) I will simply translate to the English “begone”.
So, “shenanigans begone” does sound like an old-English incantation for untwisting.
Unsure still about the meaning of “eft” 😉

#WritersCoffeeClub 23 Feb: What techniques help you write a difficult second act?
I’m not sure about specific techniques, but in Child of the Moon there is a Part II that is distinctly separate from the first. The timeline has advanced 7 years, the cast has shuffled and changed, and the tension rises even faster than during the first act, because the dramatic question is yet to be resolved.

#WritersCoffeeClub 21 Feb: Share an unexpected critique you received. Why did it surprise?
For my original Child of the Moon — a horror mystery — I received a critique from an early beta reader. He suggested I had to think harder about what genre I was targeting, said he felt it belonged in the Young Adult section.
Obviously that wasn’t the genre I was going for, and who was he to tell me to think about my genre? It was a horror mystery. Still is.
