@KarlHeinzHasliP @zkat Actually, in the research I shared re: the previous post (sorry for the repeat), the heat islands don’t go away when the data centers are turned off because construction (roofs, parking lots, roads, etc) is a significant driver of heating, unless built with intention (high albedo, green roofs, tree cover)!

@zkat Genuine Q if you have the spoons for it: how do you navigate feelings about genAI vs other also ethically concerning technologies (like cars, perhaps)?
I personally feel like I have a sort of status quo bias re: things that already existed and were problematic when I came into the world, but see more recent developments as more avoidable or exceptional, even tho maybe they’re not actually that different.

Any #HistoryOfTechnology folks out there?
I’m trying to learn more about the history of electrification (aka the widespread adoption of electricity or construction of infrastructure outside of, like, funky inventors-in-labs types of things).
In my mind, the early demonstrations of public usefulness were for electric lighting, but I am learning that the telegraph may have even earlier driven infrastructure investments.
Do you know more? Or have recommendations on where to look? I’d love to learn!

@sayashk @randomwalker I don’t think the critique of the framing is wrong, but I’m inclined to embrace the urge to slow and be more deliberate even if the reasoning behind it isn’t right.
Having worked on regulating these technologies, I think we need to be opportunistic about seizing the momentum behind this letter to steer policymakers in the right direction. If we fight among ourselves, we may lose ground. “Yes and”may work better, even with odd such bedfellows

@randomwalker @sayashk every new thing I read from you is a highlight! Thanks for doing this work. Something that my team has been working with is trying to center the humans involved in developing, deploying, and using these technologies. It’s been difficult, but a really helpful exercise in challenging the habit of obfuscating the people in the process. It’s not necessarily always the right approach, but the practice helps shine light on things anew.
