Right! Hard toilet paper!

People of a certain age from Britain (and maybe elsewhere) will remember with horror having to use toilet paper that resembled tracing paper. It was hard and crinkly, not at all absorbent, and you could literally use it for tracing.

I'm curious how many people remember the trauma of using this appalling invention.

If you did encounter it, please state the offending country in the comments.

[Boost for larger sample, please!]

4/2 The house is well stocked with wood pellets for the stove. Various friends have volunteered to get groceries for us in case it's too much for my partner. My teenage son (who is Black) will not be visiting me for the next few weeks until we get the all clear. I've canceled a doctor's appointment for Monday. I've let the other prison volunteers know I may not be able to attend the meditation group for the next few weeks. Hunkering down until the ICE-storm passes.

I'm going to have to tell my son to stay at his mother's place so that I don't have to drive him to school. This is not just for my safety, but for his. He's black, and could end up being assaulted or killed. He's adopted from one of the countries that Trump is no longer allowing immigration from, and they could easily make up an excuse to strip him of his naturalized citizenship. My father-in-law is a die-hard MAGA supporter, BTW. He voted for this. 2/2

This is insane. I just got a warning that ICE is coming to my area in the next week to two weeks. I'm a Green Card holder, but they could still put me in a detention camp or deport me without warning — e.g. because I make social media posts critical of the government. So until ICE have gone I'm going to have to hide indoors and avoid driving in case I encounter road blocks or get stopped on the street. 1/2

@cstross@wandering.shop My favorite is when people ask me to “bare with them” rather than to “bear with them.” Oh, also when people say they have “bated breath” (which sounds like a particularly awful form of halitosis) rather than “bated breath.”

@cstross@wandering.shop It was a very witty sitcom that ran for 11 seasons, with Kelsey Grammar in the lead role, playing a pretentious radio psychiatrist. Grammar is a pretty awful human being, but a great comic actor. I tend to assume everyone has heard of Frasier. It was one of the most popular comedy shows on American TV. It was a spinoff of Cheers, where Frasier and his wife Lilith were a minor recurring characters.
