I'm poking around Gallica for images to use for social media posts the department is putting together for a course we're offering this summer, "Themes in the History of Women Before 1800." Obviously, there are thousands of images, mostly engravings, showing women. It's really striking how many involve either naked bodies in the bath, lamentation of the crucifixion, or laundry.

I spent 4 hours today talking to 2 graduate seminars, 1 in each official language. In both, we had wide-ranging conversations on evidence, methodology, theory, concepts, the literature, the discipline, publicly engaged scholarship, and more. The students were engaged, inquisitive, humane, and brilliant. This is why I wanted this job. A damn good day.

Over the past couple of days I had the pleasure of chatting with a number of sharp undergrads who've applied to work on my project next year as part of the university's research opportunity program. It's been a real pleasure working with the group of four others I already have this academic year (their projects are really coming together!). I'm already looking forward to next year.

I'm going to see Dave Hause tomorrow! Not only does he write excellent songs, Hause has got great taste in music. From his 2020 EP of Dillinger Four covers, this one's fantastic:

Maybe write to the editor to ask what's up before pulling your article because things aren't going as fast as you'd like. Peer review takes a while, everyone's overworked (including the people who've already put in the work and wrote a review), and you're not any more important than anyone else. Academia is constantly finding new ways to disappoint.

A few colleagues at universities across the country recently launched a group for discussing teaching - "patisseries et pédagogie," they're calling it - and invited me along for the ride. We had our second meeting today. It was great. Unsurprisingly, many of us have the same concerns. Equally unsurprisingly, some have come up with interesting approaches for addressing them. I wish we'd done this years ago.

Start your own group today!

I gave a talk recently to some legislators. It dealt with the history of politics and trade in the region we were in. While some of what I presented was fairly obscure, most of it could be dug up by anyone with a library card and a few days to kill. But it all seemed to come as a revelation to my audience. As a rule, our elected leaders aren't dumb - some are very smart. But we do ourselves a disservice when we imagine they know what we know. They might not - we may need to explain it to them.

I'm supervising 4 undergrads working on small pieces of my research project. Their role is to comb through archival materials, to identify a modest research question, and to write a long paper answering that question. One of the students dropped by my office this morning to chat about progress. Just before leaving, they said, "I've written papers before. But they were all based on things people'd already written - I knew the answer. This is so much more fun. I feel like a detective!"
