So it turns out the report on Facebook being behind the gigantic sudden push for "age verification" laws was LLM slop. 🤬 https://old.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/1rshc1f/i_traced_2_billion_in_nonprofit_grants_and_45/
The underlying facts are ~probably~ still true, but the doubt this casts are immensely harmful and delay action.
This is one of the many ways LLMs destroy the ability to trust information: by undermining the credibility of likely well-meaning people who use them.

This wouldn't be an issue if anyone shipping hardware were brave enough to say:
"Devices aren't supposed to ship with an OS installed because you inherently can't trust one that's preinstalled and it always does things in the vendor's interests and contrary to yours. Here is the bare device and instructions on how to install an OS from a FOSS distributor outside our control."

Whew, finally got thru almost all of my network setup technical debt and got everything on the new fiber. This involved:
- Making USB-C to 12V barrel cable so the new equipment is on the DC UPS.
- Removing gratuitous segmentation that had painful tradeoffs and made IPv6 hard.
- Removing a layer of NAT and routing thru public-IP VPS for outgoing IPv4 traffic.
- Turning off address assignment on ISP-provided router and having another box do that until I get an OpenWRT replacement that can do it all right.
Now everything is fast, all devices have IPv6, and all devices can access (2D and 3D) printers. 🎉

The blatent use of "AI" to strip copyleft and claim that obvious derivatives are "reimplementations" has begun. This must be fought. Start filing license violation bug reports and abuse reports on projects like this.

Ok new rule, products of subsidiaries of nasty tech companies get referred to by the most disreputable name in the structure, not their branding.
They're not Waymo robotaxis. They're Google robotaxis.
It's not Whole Foods Market. It's Amazon Foods Market.

Hot take that shouldn't be: if your workplace requires engaging with cognitohazards, there should be a legal limit of 5 hours of work per week and $1000/hr hazard pay. After all the cognitohazard is supposed to be freeing humans up from work, right?

RE: @harrysintonen@infosec.exchange
Wow. I've been banging my head on the wall for at least a decade about the nonsense that is "API keys" and how the term and usage is dangerously ambiguous, and now they go and retroactively change it from one meaning to another because pushing "AI" is how you get those sweet promotions. 🤬

It's not my job to police how you post, but I don't like clicking on a toot and finding it's part of a "perpetual-thread" by the author that goes back years, has in it hundreds of only-vaguely-related toots and thousands of sprawling reply branches, and nearly crashes my browser trying to open.
I don't boost that even if I like the message, because I don't want to subject others to it.

AI is a lot like fossil fuel industry. Seizing and burning something (in this case, the internet, and more broadly, written-down human knowledge) that was built up over a long time much faster than it could ever be replenished.
