If you need to share an important piece of history/lore, what’s your approach that avoids infodumping?
My WIP includes some retellings of what "actually happened" in certain fairytale stories. Since I'm writing a mystery, these tales are recounted with dialog, witness interviews, and characters interjecting comments and questions during the storytelling.

Is there a country other than your own that influences your creativity?
Most of my writing has been influence by the place where I live, but my current WIP, set in a make believe "fairytale" place, is influenced by Middle Earth, the UK, and other European fairytale settings. I've never traveled to those places except through books, though.

#WordWeavers Mar. 6: If you have several stories, which one should a new reader start with?
My published fiction appeared in long-running serial form, so the best place to start is with #1 and work your way through them.
The weekly "Report From Potters Point" was published in three local Massachusetts newspapers between 1984 and 1987. Circulation was a few thousand copies a week by Hathaway Publishing Co. of Somerset Massachusetts. Those have never been digitized or made available online. They were ink on newsprint only. I have the originals typewritten on copy paper.
The monthly Report From Potter's Point was published in a magazine distributed in my hometown by my wife and I between late 2001 and early 2011. Some of those were enlarged and updated stories from the '80s run, but most were new, following the same characters. I have those in digital form and have been republishing them on Substack. To read them in order, you need to start with "December 2001" and work your way through.

Neither Jill nor Jack has lied in my WIP.
There are things they have not said--for example Jill has never shared with Jack the genealogical lore that on the Henson side of the family her great-great grandfather is rumored to have been bewitched into a frog and was returned to human form by a kiss from her great-great grandmother. Jack has not told anyone that despite his longtime devotion to Jill, he is somewhat attracted to gossipy, flirty Kitty Fisher.
But no lying.

Whether they are known or unknown, age, gender, job, and relationships with others are important defining components of characters, without which all I can say about the two MCs is that they are humans living in a small village where some believe in magic and mythical creatures, others do not, and a few grandmothers are rumored to have been killed by the Big Bad Wolf. The two MCs work together to try to solve those crimes.

I don't think so--and this does not just apply to writing. I have, during my life, performed puppet shows of my own creation, acted in amateur theater including in plays I wrote, clowned, wrote a humorous newspaper/magazine column of serialized fiction, drew editorial cartoons, performed magic shows, created and presented informative and entertaining historical presentations that often included humor.
So my overall goal through life has been to entertain and/or inform people using humor.

Not usually, but somewhere around chapter 6, I decided I needed to have another chapter earlier. I ended up adding two chapters before chapter five.

February 27: Do you edit while you write? What are the pros and cons?
I edit while I write. I write slowly and carefully, tweaking sentences, checking words for historical accuracy, reviewing earlier paragraphs and chapters for continuity, adding descriptive detail. I pause to research. At one point in the WIP, I jumped back and inserted two new chapters.
The pro is that I'm always pretty satisfied with the overall state of the story as I move along. The con is I'm by no means a speed writer.

In my current WIP the female MC, Jill Marsh, has traits of past and present loved ones. This is often the case, because if I'm creating a character who I consider to be loveable, she is going have similarities to people I have loved IRL.

#ScribesAndMakers day 26: Do you abandon creative projects? If so, how do you determine when to abandon them?
Some things seem like a great idea at the start, then turn out to me more trouble than they're worth. It could be a piece of art, some writing, a craft project. I generally don't toss out unfinished things. I shelve them, in case that particular creative spark is reignited sometime. Fortunately my projects generally do not take up a lot of physical storage space.

Just across the #Acushnet River from where I live, #NewBedford, #Massachusetts. got an all-time record 37 inches of snow in this #Blizzard of '26. My house lost power for just an hour during the storm, but others in #FairhavenMA were out for 30 hours or more. Some still have no power since early Monday morning. Many roads are still not cleared. My little house is in good shape, but we still can't really leave it yet, except on foot.

My town in southeastern Massachusetts got about 30 inches of snow today with higher drifts. Parts of MA and RI are breaking Blizzard of '78 records. A lot of my back yard was more than twice dog heights and the area Broxo is standing in was shoveled 3 times today.

These are not the games you're looking for . . .
I was born in the era of board games, Parcheesi, Monopoly, Mousetrap, Cootie, Risk, Uno, Scrabble. Dominoes were just for standing up and tipping over. The play that might have influenced creativity and storytelling involved Tonka trucks, Tinker Toys, plastic cowboys and army men, the original 12-inch G. I. Joe figures, and Lincoln Logs, which were sometimes combined in rather odd ways.
My only computer gaming has been Tetris (since the early 1990s), early "Farm Ville" on Facebook (everything was dead by about 2011), and I currently play Words With Friends and Upwords.
The word games have taught me odd bits of vocabulary like "ZA," "Qi," and "SUQ" none of which has appeared in my writing.

In college I majored in Visual Design/Illustration and have been involved in commercial printing, publishing, promotional media, etc. for 50 years. My wife was amazed when I told her I would only design a cover of a book of my own as a last resort. Book covers are a very specialized niche and I don't feel confident about trying it.

#ScribesAndMakers Feb 13: How well do you sing? If you don't consider yourself a good singer, do you sing anyway?
Fairly well. Way back in my school days I was in the chorus. Although I've been in a number of amateur theatrical productions, in the only musical I performed in, Fiddler on the Roof, I was the fiddler--the only silent role in the show--though I did sing in a couple of the a couple of the production numbers. During rehearsals for a production of Oklahoma! I stood in for the actor who would play Ali Hakim whose song is more patter speaking than singing. These days I sing to myself when alone.

Well the places where Jack and Jill, Hansel, Gretel, "Little Red Riding Hood," Tommy Tucker, Dame Trott, Lucy Locket and Kitty Fisher lived have already existed in stories. What's different about my WIP is that in and around the village of Trafton-on-Herring, those characters and other newly created characters live interconnected lives, dealing with the situation of grandmothers being killed in their little cottages in the forest.

We spend a week in a rented cabin on a small lake in New Hampshire. The cabin is owned by the grandchildren of the woman my parents rented from 66 years ago when I was two years old.

#WritersCoffeeClub 30: This month, how did you successfully navigate a challenge or a sticky point in your writing?
I don't know how I did it, but I had been stuck on the ending of Chapter Nine. I knew what I wanted to have happen, but it was not landing right. Saved and closed the file and got ready for bed. Just after getting under the covers, it came to me. I replayed the scene in my brain a couple of times to make sure I would remember it in the morning. I did. A minor change resulted not only in a perfect conclusion to Chapter Nine, but also a great opening for Chapter Ten.
