Russia is trying to restrict Telegram use, preventing access in some regions, in order to increase adoption of its state-backed Max messenger app.
But Max doesn't have the channels for incoming missile strikes, so residents of cities near the Ukrainian border failed to get push notifications about incoming strikes.

"Anthropic is asking courts to block the designation, arguing that the First Amendment does not permit the government to coerce a private actor to rewrite its code to serve government ends.”
Regardless of how you feel about AI, this case is about much more than that and could pose a huge risk to cryptography and privacy software in the future if won by the US Department of War.

How would that be even remotely acceptable?!

When Signal was designed, our threat model was protecting the communications of civil society, journalists, just regular citizens ...
The threat model of military operations & sharing your hate of Europeans was not what Signal was designed for. Ephemeral messages and cryptographic deniability are not fit for communications that require accountability.
But I appreciate their effort to make government more efficient by adding journalists to the chat instead of requiring to go through FOIA.

Il y a des idées fausses qui circulent sur les capacités de l’IA en cryptanalyse. Par exemple, dans une interview avec @gbarbey@tooting.ch, Francesca Musiani prétend que l’IA puisse apprendre et énumérer par "force brute” toutes les possibilités.
❌ Non, les modèles d’IA développés actuellement ne fournissent pas d'avantage en cryptanalyse pour casser les fondements mathématiques sur lesquels sont construits les systèmes de chiffrements.
