Keep thinking about this post—Capital isn't money. Capital is resources. Now, take that understanding, and apply it to the AI craze.
In a world where AI buys you time, ✨compute✨ is the new capital.
This reality is obfuscated a bit because AI is currently all-you-can-eat. But that's just Silicon Valley subsidizing our drug. When AI can actually fold our clothes, answer our emails, and code our tools, how much "time" you can reclaim will depend on how much compute you can afford to buy.

I honestly don't know what "privacy advocacy" means anymore.
It's like some people decided Proton was one of the good ones, and they don't want to concede that Proton screwed up because so much of their "advocacy" is just shaming people for the tech they use, and they don't want to be hypocrites
This is why shaming people as a strategy is a bad idea. Your goal then becomes to shield your ability to shame others, and not taking an honest look at power structures and adjusting based on new info

You ever get the sense that Sam Altman is just a Sillicon Valley con artist who got lucky? Like, there's so many of them, one of them was bound to strike it big. He's just another Sam Bankman-Fried or an Elizabeth Holmes who knows the Y Combinator system well enough not to get caught.

Based on Athropic's known influencer-marketing activity, and the weird pro-Anthropic YouTube videos that keep popping up in my feed, and just the sheer amount of posts that read like Claude-specific sponsored content, one wonders is this is organic praise.
Idk, perhaps my digital marketing experience is working against me here and I'm seeing what I want, but all I keep seeing is unlabeled sponsored content.

Not to rehash "the left has no liberal Joe Rogan" discourse but, listing to this episode reminded me—oh yeah, billionaires don't like funding things that call out billionaires. But they'll throw money at an anti-trans podcast (like Epstein did).
So the left relies on small donations to people we think are spreading the gospel. I suspect the donations get smaller the further left you go because centrist and some libs also don't like certain ideals out there.

I think it's impossible to overstate how influential leftist voices on TikTok were from about 2019 to 2024. And how flippant liberals outside of the app were to the idea of a US takeover.
Yes, it's unfortunate that this movement had to occur on a corporate app. But this is a two things are true situation.
No other social media platform uplifted more Black, brown, and queer voices in the history of social media. And it's very clear how that happened.

This is what I mean I say that so much of the left's opposition to Trump is just his ability to strip away our plausible deniability. And why #NoKings is fundamentally flawed.
It teaches the resist movement that once Trump is gone, we won. It's conditioning us to stop fighting when Dems take back control. And that is the point of these types of movements. They want you to forget about ICE detention camps when plausible deniability is restored.

Aren't we just the least bit curious as to why a decade has passed us, and the liberal resist movement hasn't evolved an inch? Why, after each defeat we don't have a "lessons learned" and changes to the strategy?
Why the lesson always seeks to be "we're smart and [insert scapegoat] is dumb?"
It doesn't strike you as odd that we've lost *so much* yet I can't think of a liberal who has ever suggested a change in strategy. Meanwhile, republicans have adjusted quite a bit.

People look down on the Deep South as this racist backwards part of the country. And of course, there's some truth to that. But, it is no worse than any part of the country. We just have bad public relations.
Look at California. It convinced the world that its great exports are almonds and hot yoga. That it's a bastion of progressive ideas. When the truth is, California is home to surveillance capitalism and war-tech. Californian Technocrats are the world's greatest war mongers and thieves.

Venezuela shows that Trump operates closer to the American tradition than given credit for. And I wonder if, deep down, that's what scares us the most.
Trump operates in a way that denies us our ability to pretend what's happening isn't happening. We Americans expect a certain level of plausible deniability. Especially with geopolitical happenings. Otherwise, how could we keep our lunches down?

I often think about what technology would look like if its evolution wasn't arced toward ad-tech. It's clear no one wants recording device sun glasses or AI best friends.
And it's clear that the only reason it's on the market is because a camera on our faces, and a robot trained to get us to divulge our secrets, are wonderful surveillance innovations.
I wonder what all that money could build if the goal was selling us what we need.

Just came across AI Snake Oil, that talks, in part, about how AI companies are using Congress to pass AI licensing laws as a regulatory capture strategy.
Control AI, the org that Hank recommends his audience go participate in its lobbying tools to Congress, states that its goal is to help pass laws for, yup, you guessed it—AI licenses.

Just the other day I was thinking how much the presence of POC are missed on this platform. And then I scroll the comments of a post talking about systemic oppression and I'm reminded why #Mastodon is 99% white.
How is it that so many of you are expert coders but haven't read a single book by an activist? How is it that you haven't accidentally come across even a quote to spark curiosity?
This is especially concerning for Americans. We're facing fascism and still at "I don't see color"
