I will not mourn or miss Osama bin Laden or Saddam Hussein either. That doesn’t mean either the Afghanistan War or the Iraq War turned out to be a good idea.

Yesterday the Trump regime served warrants to a bunch of locals who were at that peaceful protest of the violent church where the regional ICE director preaches.
That protest is old news, the same event about which they’re trying to nail Don Lemon to the wall. Yesterday they came for both protestors and reporters, AIUI.
Light coverage here, which doesn't mention that they banged on people’s door at 4:30-6:30am with warrants and tossed them in federal detention all day. Just shameless, unalloyed harassment.

I don’t know what the hell ICE / CBP / FBI?? / other feds are up to, but we’ve had several •huge• swarms of federal vehicles rolling out these last few days.
They aren’t doing the kinds of chaotic off-the-street kidnappings there were doing all through Dec and Jan. But they sure are up to •something•.

Things have been a •lot• quieter in Minneapolis the last 5+ days. There have been only a handful of kidnappings. (“Only a handful of kidnappings!” Words I can’t believe I’m actually saying….) Some days 1. Some days 0. (0 known, anyway.)
Things are •much• quieter. I am doing things I’ve been neglecting for weeks, months. I am posting about programming again.
And…not “but!”…and—

Here in Minneapolis it’s been widespread common knowledge that ICE agents are getting paid per head they bring in, no matter how incorrectly, no matter the actual immigration status of the person they kidnapped, no matter how carelessly or violently they do it.
It’s nice to see this confirmed in print.

A fun thing to think about: Where are all the Singularity people with solar?
There’s this whole pseudoscientific subculture organized around the one epistemological premise of “lines that go up will go up forever,” when in reality trends change and curves level off. And now here’s this one thing where people keep stubbornly predicting that it will level off and in fact the line (on a log scale) •has• kept going up far more consistently than predicted…. So why aren’t all the Effective Altruism people saying stuff like “In the future solar cells will save trillions of lives, so it doesn’t matter how many oil executives we kill in the present?”

These kids are raising funds to go to Space Camp. It’s a beautiful structure: families pay what they can, then •all• the families fundraise the remaining total for •all• the kids together. Either everyone goes or no one goes.
The ICE invasion really knocked the fundraising on its heels this year: everyone diverted, one major fundraising event cancelled. It’s looking a little dire; maybe no one goes this year. They could use some help.

Operation Metro Surge was a catastrophic failure for the Trump regime. Yes, as a terrorist operation, it succeeded: they meant to hurt and terrorize black and Brown people and the whole opposition, and they succeeded at that. But in doing so they lost their credibility, they lost the support of mushy institutions and politicians, they lost much of the popular support a would-be authoritarian needs to consolidate power.
And they lost it because we stood up to them.

A Minneapolis story:
Today, I took my kid to the neighborhood park to go ice skating. A beautiful thing about this city is that •everyone• has a neighborhood park: early in the city’s history, planners made it a goal to have a park within walking distance of every single residence. They didn’t have to shoehorn this goal in; they built up the city around it. There are little parks all over the city, many just a couple of blocks in size.
And in the winter, they flood the athletic fields: ice rinks!

Can you do a favor for my friend @alter_kaker@hachyderm.io? He was already having a lousy enough week with his car and his city falling apart when state troopers arrested his wife @anarchist_archivist@glammr.us for protesting against the murder of Alex Pretti. (Arrested for what? AFAICT, they were just looking to make an example of some protestors. Just good old harassment via the legal system.)

OK, so. As if the Trump regime hadn’t already dumped enough of their shit on us here in Minneapolis…there’s now talk about them sending •active duty military• to invade (“protect”) our city.
Maybe this is bluster. Maybe this is testing the waters. We have no idea how real these plans are, or if or when this would actually happen. I don’t think the regime does either. Regardless, we take this threat seriously: they’re stupid enough they just might do it. This nightmare could get worse.
