Wow, who would have expected a Dunkelflaute in March? But here it is:

It’s not a typo, the last number is really “38”, that is 16x less than the first number. And the whole point of #decarbonisation is to emit less CO2.

Peter Hegseth again, this time normalising war crimes:
Hegseth: No quarter, no mercy for our enemies. Yet some in the press just can’t stop. More fake news from CNN reports that the Trump administration underestimated the Iran war’s impact on the strait of hormuz. The sooner David Ellison takes over that network, the better.
Some said he’s just used the term “no quarter” metaphorically but in English it seems to be a very specific term, not a catch all phrase. Senator Mark Kelly, a navy veteran himself, commented on this:
“No quarter” isn’t some wanna be tough guy line - it means something. An order to give no quarter would mean to take no prisoners and kill them instead. That would violate the law of armed conflict. It would be an illegal order. It would also put American service members at greater risk. Pete Hegseth should know better than to throw around terms like this.
There’s currently one country in the world that has normalised execution of prisoners of war out of desperation, but it didn’t help it much - it got hopelessly stuck in #Ukraine war anyway.

The Russians have published a game on Steam called ‘Ukrainian Warfare: Gostomel Heroes’, which is a perfect example of careful disinformation directed against a specific community.
The game’s description explicitly states that they “want to show what happened in Ukraine at the beginning of this war” when “when it was supposed to end in a matter of days” thanks to “brilliant Russian airborne assault” but then “turned into a years-long slaughter” as result, as the description, suggests, of false promise of “draft peace agreement in Istanbul in March 2022”.
Every word of this description is a lie, but the game is still available on Steam Store and is scheduled for release on 24 March.
I encourage you to report it, for example, as defamatory, which may result in its availability being restricted, for example, to Russia, where the fraudsters will be able to convince themselves.

#Poland will begin producing 155mm #Ukraine Bohdana howitzers. A joint venture, PK MIL SA, has been established between Ponar Wadowice and the Kramatorsk Heavy Machine Tool Plant. Formal procedures to start production of the guns are already underway. Poland owns 51% of the company’s shares, while Ukraine holds 49%.

P.S. these rows of identical one family houses are a consequence of absence of spatial planning - they are simply built on former farming land which, for historic reasons dating back hundreds of years ago, in Poland very often was cut in the form of long, thin strips. Logistic and infrastructure nightmares of such design are kind of obvious, but people who buy them don’t really think much about these until they start living there.

People in #USSR also felt some positive impact of Stalin’s death as it gave the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) a pretext to revoke the most repressive policies introduced at peak of Stalin’s paranoia. Thousands of political prisoners were released, that is those who survived the Great Purge, imprisonment in GULag concentration camps and deportation of millions of national minorities:

Since you notified the Embassy of Ukraine of the book of condolences for the deceased Ayatollah Khamenei and Iran’s military leadership, I feel compelled to remind you of the following.
As military allies of the Russian Federation, the deceased leaders of Iran had on their hands the blood of thousands of Ukrainian citizens – men and women, children and elderly – killed with the help of the infamous Iran-made “Shahed” drones and other military know-how so eagerly provided to Russia by your government. Your leaders were complicit in bringing endless grief to Ukrainian civilians.
Being a person of faith, I try not to rejoice in the death of other people, even those who chose to be tormentors of my country, who did nothing bad to theirs. Once again #Russia videos serve as the primary source of information about the #Ukraine advances in Dnipropetrovsk oblast’ due to the latter holding a strict media silence. The paradox is that Russian videos of attacks on Ukrainian units on the territory previously occupied by Russians confirm presence of ZSU in these areas. Due to fierce fighting it’s difficult to claim anyone’s control over the territory but one thing that can be said is that Russian offensive on Dnipropetrovsk oblast’ has stalled.

Another pretty good map (author: Filip Starościński) of the front line changes in #Russia invasion on #Ukraine since 2022. Please note the massive extent of territories liberated by end of 2022 especially in Kharkiv oblast’ (violet to red on top) and in Kherson oblast’ (violet to red on the bottom). The fact that Russia actually lost plenty of territories it occupied early in 2022 and then its gains over subsequent four years are rather humble is probably the best indication of how massive failure the war was for Putin.

For the 20th (twentieth) time #Russia activists curated by FSB have destroyed a memorial plaque on the house where Anna Politkovskaya, a journalist shot on #Putin birthday in 2005, was living.
Meanwhile, the Museum of History of GULag in Moscow had been renamed to “Museum of Genocide of Russian People” with an entirely new exposition which will now focus on Russian losses in WW2. The original GULag museum had been originally closed due to “fire safety violations”.

#Poland tightens cybersecurity rules targeting non #NATO suppliers
The government says the law is both a response to the rising number of cyberattacks and the need to implement the EU’s Network and Information Systems Directive 2 (NIS 2) directive, which was meant to be done by October 2024.
The main change creates a category of “high-risk” vendors who will be barred from providing goods or services to sectors considered vital to the state. One criterion for such a designation is a supplier’s origin and whether it is controlled by a country outside NATO.

Interesting case from #CERN where #Russia team leaving the project sabotaged continued operations of the module they delivered by refusing to supply documentation on its operations, thus threatening continuity of the project:
When CERN definitively ended its cooperation with Russia, engineers were left with Russian equipment for which complete documentation was lacking. Shutting down the equipment threatened to paralyse the key ALICE experiment. That’s when the Poles stepped in, figured out how the Russian equipment worked, reverse engineered it, and not only saved the project, but became key players in the Large Hadron Collider. Krystian Rosłon from the Warsaw University of Technology revealed the details of this incredible operation to the PAP Nauka news agency.

#Poland PISM analyst Daniel Szeligowski on #Russia & #Ukraine “peace negotiations”
Let’s get some basic facts straight again, or who is “going to have to get moving” and come to the negotiating table.
In early 2014, Ukraine was a neutral country, led by a pro-Russian president, with around 70% of the population opposed to NATO membership. Yet Russia violated Ukraine’s neutrality, annexed Crimea, and then launched a covert invasion in eastern Ukraine.
Petro Poroshenko won 2014 presidential election after campaigning on a settlement with Russia and preserving a special status for the Russian language. He was initially sceptical about NATO membership and emphasized Ukraine had to rely primarily on its own army to ensure security.
Volodymyr Zelensky also won the presidency promising compromise with Russia - with politically naive statements to stop the shooting, sit down with Putin, and talk. He was even more sceptical about NATO membership than Poroshenko, once saying he never visits anyone unless invited.
Zelensky went to the Paris summit with Putin in December 2019 with a conciliatory position. He genuinely wanted to reach an agreement and was ready to make concessions. Later on, he negotiated multiple ceasefires, and even began withdrawing troops from the then front line.
Zelensky was also ready to drop Ukraine’s NATO bid in exchange for a Russian troop withdrawal from Ukraine’s territory, and talks were already underway before 2022. Yet Putin still launched a full-scale invasion.
A few hours before the Russian attack, on the night of 23/24 February 2022, Zelensky called the Kremlin to propose negotiations once again. But no one picked up. Predictably, Putin chose war over diplomacy.
Immediately after the invasion, Zelensky declared readiness to negotiate with Russia without any preconditions. Instead of accepting the offer, Putin sent his stooge Medinsky to present Ukraine with what amounted to a capitulation ultimatum.
In the first weeks of the invasion, Zelensky repeatedly signaled readiness to drop Ukraine’s NATO bid, but sought international security guarantees. Yet Putin demanded Russia be consulted before any assistance is given to Ukraine in case of aggression, and he broke off the talks.
Putin has so far shown no willingness to compromise with Ukraine. His war aims remain maximalist - subjugating Ukraine and changing its regime. He seeks Ukraine’s partition and turning what remains into a Russian protectorate. He has absolutely no real interest in Donbas.
The U.S. side’s messaging on peace talks is pure abstraction - it amounts to an attempt to construct a parallel reality. Putin has not changed his position on compromise with Ukraine, and the supposed technical concessions are meant to mislead inexperienced American negotiators.
Zelensky has repeatedly shown readiness to negotiate, from early compromise offers to dropping the NATO bid. Ukraine has come to the table more than once. It is Putin who must eventually come to the table, yet current U.S. policy signals to him that he still doesn’t have to.

The political effects of X’s feed algorithm
Feed algorithms are widely suspected to influence political attitudes. However, previous evidence from switching off the algorithm on Meta platforms found no political effects. Here we present results from a 2023 field experiment on Elon Musk’s platform X shedding light on this puzzle. We assigned active US-based users randomly to either an algorithmic or a chronological feed for 7 weeks, measuring political attitudes and online behaviour. Switching from a chronological to an algorithmic feed increased engagement and shifted political opinion towards more conservative positions, particularly regarding policy priorities, perceptions of criminal investigations into Donald Trump and views on the war in Ukraine. In contrast, switching from the algorithmic to the chronological feed had no comparable effects. Neither switching the algorithm on nor switching it off significantly affected affective polarization or self-reported partisanship. To investigate the mechanism, we analysed users’ feed content and behaviour. We found that the algorithm promotes conservative content and demotes posts by traditional media. Exposure to algorithmic content leads users to follow conservative political activist accounts, which they continue to follow even after switching off the algorithm, helping explain the asymmetry in effects. These results suggest that initial exposure to X’s algorithm has persistent effects on users’ current political attitudes and account-following behaviour, even in the absence of a detectable effect on partisanship.

Born in #Russia and now citizen of #Poland skater Vladimir Semirunniy is the best example that the famous “Polish russophobia” is exclusively targeted towards Putinist revanchism and the Greater Russian arrogance, not Russians on their own. Semirunniy is now celebrated as a national hero in Poland as he won silver on the Olympics.
P.S. Semirunniy is a celebrity, but I’ve known plenty of Russians working in IT in Poland - some emigrated on the first warning signs in 2012, some after 2014, some after 2022.

Yesterday #Russia dropped a ODAB-1500, a one-and-a-half-tonne aerial glide bomb, on the centre of #Kramatorsk, but it did not explode.
If it had exploded, today we would be reading about dozens, if not hundreds, of victims, because the bomb fell during the day in a residential area with several supermarkets, where there are usually crowds of people.
There are no military facilities there, so it can be assumed that the sole purpose of the bombing was to terrorise the approximately 40,000 civilians remaining in the Kramatorsk agglomeration, just as the Russians did in Mariupol.

#Russia media, of course, pounced on Epstein’s archive to prove that ‘the West is morally rotten,’ as Putin has been claiming for years. Of course, they skip all the threads where Epstein’s underage victims are sent by Russian modelling agencies, his visa is arranged by FSB officer Bieliakow, and all the Russian threads, because they don’t fit.
And here, several popular Russian channels, including ‘Vault 8. Убежище №8.’ couldn’t resist and wrote that in Russia, this whole ominous ‘Epstein island’ is actually the whole country…
During dinner, we were shown a report on the Epstein files: Satanism, cannibalism, paedophilia, child trafficking from Ukraine to EU countries, etc. Conclusion: ‘SVO [special military operation] is a fight against global evil.’
At the same time, during the SVO:
— I listened to the stories of several female specialists in men’s health. One was raped by her grandfather, then later by her first husband. The second had a stepfather who was violent and raped her mother. The third had a father who, if he didn’t like something, would grab her by the back of her head and throw her face down on the floor.
Two of the three girls are very beautiful (the third is just beautiful), friendly, and intelligent, despite their backgrounds, but they have mental health issues of varying severity.

There are so many former convicts in some units that it is sometimes difficult to find someone without a criminal record.
It’s just that none of the participants in such stories are dollar billionaires, own islands, or are citizens of the Russian Federation.

#Ukraine Defence Intelligence has pre-emptively exposed a large-scale Russian hybrid information operation planned before and during the Munich Security Conference (13–15 February 2026).
Russia is attempting to weaponise so-called “pacifist” movements in Europe to launder its war crimes, weaken democratic resolve, and pressure governments into cutting support for Ukraine.
Key individuals involved have been identified by Ukrainian intelligence:
Elena Kolbasnikova — organiser of anti-Ukraine protests in Cologne and Düsseldorf, openly supports the Kremlin; received Russian citizenship in 2023.Max Schlund — her partner and coordinator of pro-Kremlin rallies in Germany, linked to Russian proxy networks and so-called “Cossack” structures.Vyacheslav Seeswald — a central distributor of Kremlin narratives within the Friedensbewegung network, operating via Telegram; maintains contacts with Russian intelligence and European far-right groups.
After searches by German prosecutors in 2024 over suspected illegal weapons possession, Kolbasnikova and Schlund fled to #Russia, further confirming their operational role.
Narratives Moscow is pushing:
– “Supporting Ukraine will trigger World War III” – “NATO and the EU are the real aggressors” – “Russia poses no threat to Europe”
Of course, these are not “peace” initiatives - by thwarting Europe’s defense they are enabling Russia’s aggression just like in the good old times, when Soviet rockets installed in Eastern Europe were presented as “peaceful” while Western rockets were “imperialist” 😄

#Ukraine Denys Prokopenko on the role of #Russia #GRU general Alexeev shot today in Moscow:
Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseyev, First Deputy Chief of the GRU of the Russian General Staff, who was shot in Moscow this morning, was the senior Russian representative at the negotiations in Mariupol in May 2022, during the withdrawal of the Mariupol garrison from Azovstal.
Alekseyev pledged that Russia would comply with the Geneva Convention on the treatment of prisoners of war and personally guaranteed humane conditions of detention for our captured servicemen. His signature appears on the relevant document, signed in Mariupol at that time. For our part, we demonstrated humanity and handed over to Alekseyev three Russian prisoners of war who had received medical treatment and were provided with food and water.
The word of an officer, a native of Vinnytsia Oblast, and a traitor to his homeland, proved to be worthless. The systematic torture of captured Azov fighters, the denial of medical care, and starvation are clear proof of this.
Prokopenko didn’t mention it but the most hideous war crime committed by Russians agains the Mariupol prisoners was Olenivka massacre:

#Denmark social-democratic prime minister Mette Frederiksen recently made a statement that caused stir in some left-wing circles:
“To those who have come here and commit crimes: you shouldn’t be here. We don’t want your reckless driving or your culture of dominance. You’re destroying the world’s most beautiful country.”
There’s nothing “right-wing” or “fascist” in this statement. If you believe in equality of all citizens, rule of law and human rights which are fundamental set of left-wing values you can’t support someone who rejects the very idea of human rights, believes in fundamental inequality on gender or tribal grounds or that homosexuality should be punished by hanging only because “they come from another culture” and “they will change over time”.
It’s quite the opposite, they won’t. If you don’t clearly signal rejection of these archaic values straight away, what happens it the archaic and oppressive culture is reinforced and gradually takes over. In short, you can’t bash fundamentalist Christians for patriarchy and oppression of women or LGBT, but at the same time pretend fundamentalist Muslim don’t share the very same archaic values.
And the largest problem with any illegal immigration is that people who come to your country this way have zero formal obligation to share your country’s values or laws and you can’t really expect them to do so… because they arrived illegally.
And I personally believe that those left-wing circles who in some bizarre logic adopted this cultural laissez-faire approach where all cultures are somehow “equalt” even if they categorically openly reject any equality are largely responsible for the current rise of right-wing parties like AfD in Germany, MAGA in the US, National Front in France, Reform in the UK and “Konfederacja” in Poland.
So what Frederiksen said is very refreshing as it signals a very clear return to simple universal moral values on which the European society was built and rejection of this weird double-morality where the most oppressive cultures are treated somehow preferentially simply because they come from oppressive countries.

What’s the story behind the “energy infrastructure attacks ceasefire” unilaterally announced today by Trump and not confirmed by either #Ukraine or #Russia ?
1) Russia's intense attacks on Ukraine in recent weeks have depleted its ammunition supplies, which are produced on an ongoing basis anyway.
2) A wave of record cold weather is currently sweeping across Russia, providing an ideal opportunity for counterattacks.
3) It seems logical that it was not Trump who asked Putin, but Putin who asked Trump, and the latter is presenting this as a result of his genius, as was the case with the "peace plan"
4) Russia has not confirmed any pause, so it is free to keep it or not, as soon as it decides that continuing the attacks will cause more damage to Ukraine than to themselves.

#Russia Putin’s aide Ushakov on a meeting between President Zelenskyy and Putin:
Our president have said several times that if Zelenskyy is actually ready for a meeting, then we invite him to Moscow. And we will definitely provide for his security and the necessary work conditions.
In #Poland we have a rather painful historic lesson about any trips to Moscow under Russia’s “security guarantees”, just read this story:
The Government Delegates (…) were invited by Soviet general Ivan Serov (with agreement of Joseph Stalin) to a conference on their eventual entry to the Soviet-backed Provisional Government. (…) The Polish politicians were presented with a warrant of safety, but were instead arrested in Pruszków and brutally beaten by the NKVD on 27 and 28 March. Leopold Okulicki, Jan Stanisław Jankowski and Kazimierz Pużak were arrested on the 27th with 12 others the following day. Alexander Zwierzyński had been arrested earlier. They were brought to Moscow for interrogation in the Lubyanka.

Precisely so. And I’ve learned it the hard way - by watching videos of hundreds of executions of Ukrainian soldiers by Russians which went entirely unpunished by any international law or whatever.
Then one Polish humanitarian law expert on Twitter explained what the idea of (humanitarian) “convention” actually means - a mutual contract-like agreement, not an universal law like law of gravity. Two warring parties simply agree between themselves they won’t do certain things, but there’s nothing but this voluntary agreement to that. There’s no world police to enforce compliance.
I think we had been living so deeply immersed in the democratic system for decades that we internalised it completely but also completely forgotten that democracy is not the only way of organising societies in the world. And in quantitive terms is certainly not the most popular.
There’s a certain dose of both arrogance and naivety in the belief that #democracy is so superior (and I believe it is) that everyone will dream of converting into one. We grew so blind that we started voluntarily ignoring existence of cultures that outright reject the concept of universal law, rule of law, human rights, equality etc because they are driven by completely different values - tribal, religiou or simply criminal ones. And we learned to pretend that these cultures don’t look at democracies as a model role but as easy prey.
In short, we convinced ourselves we live among Bambis and pigeons while closing our eyes on all the crocodiles and pretending they don’t exist, and even if the do, all they dream about is becoming Bambis. Talking Bambi language to a crocodile never ends well.

As #Poland is now enacting the EU #DSA into its law, there’s a significant outcry about “censorship” from some political groups… and, of course, the usual #BigTech suspects - #Facebook and #Twitter. Just like the infamous Rubio statement about what these companies were really fined for by EU (for mass-scale scams, not opposition to “censorship”), the censorship argument in DSA is a complete manipulation.
I have many friends who work in incident response, fraud prevention in Poland (and elsewhere) and they seem to be absolutely disgusted by the scale to which these platforms became literally facilitators of the crime, protecting scammers rather than their victims. Here’s what one of them just wrote on LinkedIn:
Why does Facebook, in its business model, consciously profit from scams that are advertised? Why do they accept money from criminals who steal from platform users?
The same Facebook recently banned posts in which CERT Polska and others (including me) warned about the filth pouring into the feed on this portal. They made a silly excuse that ‘it’s the algorithms’…

So just to reiterate: you can report obvious scams on Facebook as much as you like, but they’re almost never deleted. But then a Polish CERT (computer incident response organisation) posts a warning about scams to Facebook users and Facebook moderation jumps on it in an instant, hiding that post from everyone.
And that’s precisely why not only EU but every country protecting its citizens needs law like DSA.
P.S. on my last visit to Poland I, as usual, had to remove a ton of spyware from my mom’s laptop. She spends plenty of time on Facebook and it’s always “the computer told me I need to install updates”, meaning of course the scam pretending to be Windows messages displayed right in her Faceboook feed.

A funny case study of the 21st century “software engineering” at its best.
As result of #AWS failure, a number of commercial products stopped working that relied on AWS hosted services. Such as the Eight Sleep Pod beds.
Yes, physical beds for sleeping relied on AWS to work. And it was not some kind of extremely sophisticated “AI” processing, but simple schedule “make warmer”, “make colder”, “raise/lower” etc. All that was controlled through AWS.
When AWS stopped working users started complaining that their beds got stuck in weird positions and users were unable to control them. So yes, a bed say in Netherlands stopped working because it could not retrieve instructions from US server which were sent there by the person physically present on said bed.
And the bonus: each bed sent 20 GB of telemetry data to AWS each month.
