If I understand this correctly the reason RAM has quadrupled in price is that a huge quantity of RAM that hasn't been produced yet has been bought with money that doesn't exist to populate GPUs that also haven't been produced to go in datacenters that haven't been built powered by infrastructure that may never exist to meet a demand that doesn't exist at all to make profit margins that mathematically can't exist while economists talk about this thing they call the "rational markets hypothesis".

Back in the day at a previous gig I tried and largely failed to convince anyone that sudden upswings in people sharing detailed instructions about screwing around in the guts of the product should be treated the same way sudden upswings in crash rates: a capital-I Incident that deserves near term attention and careful retrospective investigation. What is this, if not a user expectation going so badly unmet that people are _happy_ to risk bricking their box to fix it? https://wandering.shop/@susankayequinn/115576953025427384

Flatpak, snaps, kuberdockering and every other kind of containerization - and the app store model, and the Wayland process model both count - all of it is basically the same shape: isolation in the name of safety that avoids fully explaining safe for who, safety of what. Restrictions on Freedom To interoperate and compose software, so business models around the code are Free From the risks of user agency. The paucity of ambition here, the distrust of the operator just kills me.

We don't really have an equivalent to this kind of effort in open spaces. It takes a particular commitment and focus, and our zeal tends to nest elsewhere.

This is that oddball 4th gen iPod touch with no rear camera. It’s last update was iOS 9.3.5, so it’s missing a few of that platform’s more recent conveniences, but it’s still one of my favorite pieces

Even picking it up today, 15 years after it was made, it feels like a postcard from a better future not taken. In a lot of ways this - the inexpensive base model of its generation and I think the cheapest iPod Touch ever sold - is the absolute high water mark of Apple's industrial design ethos. Everything you could remove from Usable Computer and still have Usable Computer left is gone, and everything left is incredibly well polished. And somehow, it still has room for a headphone jack.

Re-upping this annually, as I must: You need to internalize the idea that hypocrisy is not a meaningful accusation to the right. Of course they're hypocrites. That you are bound - by rules, standards, logic, human decency, some fundamental moral consistency, anything at all - and they are not? That is their conception of what power is, and why they seek it. So they can exercise power, without constraint, and you cannot. That is the point. Hypocrisy is the virtue-signaling of fascism.

The talks from MatrixConf 2024 are up!

Here's mine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cs_V8Ns4ggc

I haven't even watched the whole thing, and I hope I haven't embarrassed myself any more than the normal amount, but I love (and I say this with genuine love, I laughed for real) that I was introduced as "that guy over there". I'm going to add that to my CV immediately.

"Introduced at the 2024 Matrix Conference as 'that guy over there'."

The rest of the talks are here:

I was in SF for a few days this week. There are cars lining every street, owners paying pennies an hour if they're paying anything at all for the space and the state is tearing up homeless encampments as though the people in them have anywhere else to go or any way to get there. There are parking lots taking up half a city block all over downtown and an affordable housing crisis.

Subsidized housing and full employment programs for cars, subsidized theft and state-sanctioned cruelty for people.
