I guess at least the Scots now don’t have to cheer for England. (Not that having The Proclaimers’ “Cap in Hand” playing on repeat in my head would have been a bad thing.) #Rugby #SixNations #IREvSCO

Where’s the petition to ban #cricket commentators from using the phrase “without troubling the scorer” as a euphemism for a batter being out for a duck. As an old fart who learned to score with a pencil and a paper scorebook, I can assure you the scorers were very much troubled. #sports #sportsball

@eleanorrees@mas.to @piraat@mastodon.social Obviously there’s lots of “SA = chokers” talk but… does that even count as choking? They had been pummeled out of the match before the power play was over.

@scottearle@poorlyrendered.com @fesshole@mastodon.social I’ve had a few abdominal surgeries recently. Given what had been shaved when I came out of the OR, I certainly hope there was some amount of bits-looking going on. Bits-*caring* is, I assume, an entirely different matter.

One of my favorite biology facts:

Humans and giraffes both have seven neck bones. An owl has twice that number. This (plus other adaptations) is what enables them to turn their heads so far, which helps them hunt.

Apparently it’s #WorldCancerDay, so… hi 👋 I’m your poster child for why you should get screened - whatever your doctor says you’re due for, DO IT.

If I had gotten screened a little earlier, my cancer journey would have been done and dusted in a matter of weeks. If I had waited until I had symptoms, I’d be dead.

@damianlehmann@mastodon.social If you’re good at estimating distance as you run, use that. Use the scale on the map/compass to figure out “run across this field for 200m, then…”. If not, use the symbols on the map to find landmarks to achieve the same thing: “run across this field to the big tree next to a man-made object”. Either way, use the map and what you see around you to keep predicting and correcting - “there should be a stone wall going off to the left .. yes, there it is, ok next I’ll go over a small hill, …”. Try to keep your thumb on your current map location so you can keep checking and updating without having to re-find your location every time.

@damianlehmann@mastodon.social Not as lost as you’re gonna be 🤣 OK will it be fun? Yes! Orienteering is great. Advice for n00bs… brain dump/no particular organization: for gear, a good compass, trail running shoes, and long sleeves/pants (which I’m assuming you’ll have anyway, if you’re in the northern hemisphere right now). You can get fancier, but no need. Don’t try to go too fast. From your profile, it looks like you’re an outdoor runner, so play to your strengths: prioritize using trails and open ground as much as possible, where you’ll be fast (even if it’s more distance). Take your time with navigation and route planning, which will be the new part for you. Hobbyists have the phrase “measure twice, cut once”. Likewise, read the map twice, run once 😝 If you have time to practice with an O map and compass, a simple exercise I give to new folks is to get north from the compass, align the map to that, then just walk around randomly for a bit, practicing turning the map in your hands to keep it (at least roughly) aligned north as you turn your body.
