Took the bus and my droid (wheelie cart) out to get compost. Not expensive but on the heavy-schlepping side. Got two bags of mushroom compost, 1.5cu ft/35L apiece.
The saffron planters were topped off with this, burying the dried plant leaves, and they will be left to their own devices until late summer. I won't put chicken wire over the planters unless the squirrels start digging in them.
There was plenty of compost remaining from the first bag to amend the rose bush (it's looking like a real plant instead of sick sticks), and my presumed hosta patch.
Some of the second bag will go to the weird plant bed at the west end of the house, and the bulk of it will be shared in the lilacs and periwinkle patch.

Sometime last year, a friend of Mom’s gifted her this super artful bird feeder. The whole thing is hand-carved from a single piece of wood. It’s lovely. It’s also not hardcore enough to survive the regularly-occurring 50mph+ winds, and would just be pillaged by squirrels.
I have adopted the bird feeder for now, and have it at my house where I am contemplating what could fit inside it such that I could pot a tiny plant in there and let it cascade down from the openings.

This morning I have been reading up on local water restrictions. At present, my local area does not have anything specific enacted but we are in one of the areas of "exceptional drought," the highest rating. Residents are encouraged to not water between 10am and 6pm, and to limit watering to three times per week. This is mostly talking about lawns, and I am doing zero lawn watering.
My shower catch bucket gets dumped outside about every four showers, and that's about a 3/4 full 5-gallon bucket when that happens. That is shared around the yard to different spots each time.
I am not doing any of the usual garden watering today because Friday's snow/rain was recorded as 1" of water received, and that will cover this week. All the established perennials are blooming/growing pretty energetically.
One of my garden strategies this year is to disturb the soil, water, and just watch and see what the heck is already growing here. My neighbor said the previous resident literally never gardened.

@WanderingBeekeeper I have read about old-style Japanese homes and thermic shock. My bathrooms are both central house rooms with minimal exterior walls and closing those doors does not cut those rooms off from the central heating.

Was just passing the bathroom and heard the wind whistling in the ceiling fan vent, and suddenly I understood why I and the house got chilled last night.
I had vent covers over the two bathroom ceiling fans all winter, so for most of the freezing weather, those openings were sealed shut. I took them down when we had a run of really hot days a few weeks ago, so I could purposely vent hot air out of the house.
With last night's brisk wind turning the fan blades, my vents had to have been venting out warm house air and/or letting in cold outside air.
I don't want to reinstall the covers for this on-again off-again cold, but I can close bathroom doors when I go to bed and reduce the heat loss.

Awake WAY too early, between the sound of the furnace turning on and what sounds like really icy wind outside. And it was chilly even with my extra fleece layer on the bed.
Trying to remind myself the temps will be summer-hot two to three days from now.
