@JizzelEtBass @KatyElphinstone it doesn’t even seem logical. It assumes that every child will have equal opportunity and means to be identified. No mistakes made, no parents without the means, no one with views that would prejudice them against proper evaluation (especially if the child’s parent, teacher, or doctor), no children that live their early life in a country where the situation is different, no gaps in understanding because the child is raised by people with a different culture, no doctors without sufficient education on autism, and on and on and on… any number of things could result in a delayed diagnosis.

@danbrotherston @Daojoan that’s how I feel about it, but most passive income seems exploitative, whether you’re tricking people into buying a product that they don’t need and/or exploiting cheap labor to build/maintain the product.

@praetor @SrRochardBunson years back I read that most decently-sized companies in U.S. run their own insurance plans under the branding of an insurance company. I don’t know the full details, but it obviously has some problems for the employees. Found this page with a little more info: https://www.siia.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=7533 In 2000, 33% (50 million) of people with private insurance through their employer had a plan like this.

@cstross@wandering.shop I learned on a manual and used maps, too. I drove alone a lot and, on long trips, I got used to pulling into a parking lot and making mental plans for where I was going to be going next to get to where I wanted.

One time I was on a major road and didn’t see what I was expecting to see and didn’t have anywhere to pull over, so I was trying to check the map while driving and ended up driving onto a closed military base without realizing it. I later found out the other cars had stickers so didn’t have to stop. I was just going with the flow, so maybe they missed me somehow. I was fortunate that I wasn’t shot or arrested, but this was before 9/11 and they didn’t do anything.

These days I do use electronic navigation and probably couldn’t get by if it went out for the simple fact that I haven’t owned a map in a decade or more.

@cstross@wandering.shop I just had a thought after reading this: what if all of those stories about AI trying not to be turned off were intended to evoke a sense that it’s conscious so that some people would resist the idea of turning it off out of sympathy? Would some people think that some amount of environmental impact is worth it to keep a “conscious” thing conscious? Would some people potentially think it should be used because if it’s not used, it will “die”?
