In 2008 I had started a business. It wasn’t affected by American crisis of the time, it wasn’t tied to US in any direct way. But the moment the crisis got announced, local currency lost ~70% of its value.
The government had halted contract payments without cancelling liabilities.
Oligarchs were delighted to pay three times less to extract resources for export.
I was lucky to not be buried in debt.

Almost universally:
- job adverts I had to sift through focused on tools and buzzwords, not the real goals
- interviewers couldn’t answer “what will make you consider this hire a success in half a year”, even when they were business owners
- coders focus on the next cool tool, not the thing that needs to be done
- words “verifying the outcome” make “engineers” scoff
I see clear evolution here.

@corbet In my eyes, this is just a continuation of an older trend of submitting patches with no maintainability consideration.
I’ve seen it many times: a discussion of a feature is underway, someone creates a patch with no tests and barely implemented happy path, someone else asks a few month later why it’s not merged…
It’s automated now.
