There was lots of protest when #Japan announced it was building the world's first bullet-train in the early 1960s.

They went ahead and built it—and now the low-emission, affordable, convenient shinkansen system is the envy of the world.

Europe and Asia are envied for their networks of fast, clean electric trains that carry passengers between cities affordably, and with much less impact on the environment than highways and airplanes.

Yet every high-speed rail line had to contend with protests...

The more of *these* you have where you live, the less you have to worry about the impact the warmongers are having on the global fossil fuel supply.

Sustainability is resilience.

US used to be a leader in urban rail transit.

"In 1990, 4 of the world’s 14 longest metro networks—or those that include monorail, subway, elevated, and automated light metro—were located in the United States. Today, not a single US network sits on that list."

Protests have started against Alto, the low-emission, electric-powered high-speed rail project between #Quebec City and #Toronto.

According to Alto, the trains could carry 43M passengers, and bring $35B/yr in economic benefits to #Canada.

Many communities want a station...

High-speed rail in #Canada isn't a fantasy—it's moving ahead.

Pay no attention to this National Post article.

Author's goal is to deride passenger rail. He suggests per-km costs of Alto HSR would be same as Eglinton LRT. Mostly rural route is nothing like building urban transit—of course.

Tendentious, ill-willed, ill-informed.

I spent a lot of time on a recent train trip from #Vancouver to #Toronto on railway sidings, waiting for a slow-moving freight train to pass. In the US, Amtrak trains have legal precedence over freight trains. That's not the case in #Canada, where VIA Rail plays second fiddle to Class One freights like CPKC. Does it have to be this way? I take a look in the latest HIGH SPEED dispatch: https://www.highspeed.blog/why-your-train-is-so-slow/

What's missing from these pictures?

No on-street parking makes all the difference in the cities of #Japan. The 1962 "proof-of-parking" law means you buy a car, you've got to show you've got a place—off public streets—to warehouse it.
