This is the first time that's happened since 2020 - the start of the anti-#trans wave that has swept the country.

I think the worst part of the past 3 years of rebuilding my work during the rise of the far right has been seeing how many people I formerly respected decide that expecting basic, ordinary decency can be "politically controversial" as long as it's about people like me.

I'm not talking about pronouns or language. I'm talking about just *basic* politeness. You don't have to be a member of Antifa or a Soros-paid protestor to know that going out of your way to be cruel on purpose is wrong.

Here's where Newsom gets it very wrong and why I'm mad.

I don't need you to express views that are in 100% alignment with me.

I just need you to agree that purposefully targeting any group of people with misinformation and then using the platform of the Presidency to demonize them ... is wrong.

I don't think that's a weird or controversial view and I don't think it requires you to have any particular opinion about pronouns or whatever.

Hey I actually think encouraging civic involvement (including but not limited to voting) really is a big deal and the ultimate cure for the cycle we're in. You know what makes the cycle worse? Poopooing efforts to get people involved. Acting like our problems aren't solvable. Both-sides-isms. Easy, knee-jerk cynicism about baseline principles of democracy. Mocking people for trying to find common ground where they can.

Hey it's ok to just mute stuff on social media that stresses you out. Like, yeah, nobody should hide their head in the sand completely, but there are better ways to stay informed than your feed. Consider that making us feel overwhelmed is their actual strategy.
