The Man from Maybury Hill

OK, one of my rear spokes has come free of its eyelet on the hub. The metal of the hub has broken off somehow, leaving the spoke to come loose.
I don't know what to do now, does this mean a new hub? Can a replacement hub be obtained and fitted for less than the cost of a new wheel?
And how the heck could this even happen?!
