Australian and Aussie-adjacent pals, I've just heard the AYCC is at risk of folding. They have an urgent fund appeal open right now (linked below). The Australian Youth Climate Coalition has been running for 20 years (!!), they specialise in mobilising the youth for climate action. I know so many people who've done a stint volunteering with the AYCC (including me, nearly 20 yrs ago...). It would be a huge shame if they were to fold. It's a very short boat ride the one from Singapore to Batam, Indonesia. But it's really a springboard from the globalised, motorised, and carbonised part of the world to the Global South. I have already travelled about 14,000km to come here without taking airplanes and I truly savour the crossing of this physical but most importantly cultural boundary between North and South. The taxi that takes me to the embarkment to Jakarta travels through bumpy roads, which turn into dirt road at the very access to the Pelni (the Indonesian national ferry company) departure point. I am torn between accepting the offer of porters to carry my luggage or carrying it myself. It's little money for me and a lot of money for them. I opt for carrying it myself, as I am short of Indonesian cash and I perceive porters' requests as bordering extortion. I travel 3rd class, because I want to stay as close as possible to the travelling conditions of most travellers. I get a bed in one of the many sleeping halls provided on the ship. A mattress is provided, although it's better not to think of the last time it has been washed. I must say sleeping is hard. People talk loudly throughout the night and kids cry loud. However, I am so tired that I sleep tight. It is a common belief that higher elevations are naturally cooler. In pristine landscapes, this rule holds firm. But what about urban environments? Humanity moves vast amounts of matter and energy, sometimes fundamentally altering the thermodynamic parameters of our habitat. 🛰️ I correlated summer Land Surface Temperature (LST) data across Calgary’s neighborhoods with the Canadian Medium-Resolution Digital Elevation Model (MRDEM). The chart below illustrates the relationship between "Average Elevation" and "Average Surface Temperature" specifically for established residential communities. As observed, this relationship is notably weak, even though a slight cooling trend persists. That's such a profound tension you're holding, Richard. You have to somehow contain this deep knowing - about those ancient cycles being broken, about the true scale of what's happening - and then walk into meetings where you need to be measured, strategic, practical. It's like you're asked to be both the person who fully sees the emergency and the person who can't act like it's an emergency. That takes an enormous emotional toll - to know something is urgent and sacred, and then have to work within systems that treat it as manageable and incremental must be challenging. #ClimateAction
