Il soggetto del dipinto
L'opera raffigura la scena biblica dell'Arcangelo Gabriele che visita il sommo sacerdote Zaccaria per informarlo che avrà un figlio: Giovanni Battista. Gabriele non è raffigurato nel dipinto, ma la luce che brilla nell'angolo in alto a destra ne annuncia l'arrivo.
La ricerca sull'autenticità
Il dipinto scomparve dalla vista del pubblico dopo che un privato lo acquistò nel 1961. L'attuale proprietario contattò il Rijksmuseum, consentendo agli esperti di studiare l'opera con moderni strumenti analitici. La loro ricerca, durata due anni, ha dimostrato che i colori utilizzati si ritrovano anche in altre opere di Rembrandt dello stesso periodo. Anche la tecnica pittorica e la stratificazione degli strati pittorici sono comparabili. Le scansioni hanno rivelato "cambiamenti compositivi che confermano l'autenticità dell'opera", ha affermato il museo.
La conferma e l'esposizione al pubblico
Infine, la firma è stata ritenuta originale e l'analisi della tavola di legno conferma che anche la data del 1633 sul dipinto è corretta. "È un bellissimo esempio del modo unico in cui Rembrandt racconta le storie", ha commentato il direttore del Rijksmuseum, Taco Dibbits. L'opera è ora in prestito a lungo termine al museo e sarà esposta al pubblico da mercoledì 4 marzo.

The Subject of the Painting
The work depicts the biblical scene of the Archangel Gabriel visiting the high priest Zacharias to inform him that he will have a son: John the Baptist. Gabriel is not depicted in the painting, but the light that shines in the upper right corner announces his arrival.
The Search for Authenticity
The painting disappeared from public view after a private collector purchased it in 1961. The current owner contacted the Rijksmuseum, allowing experts to study the work with modern analytical tools. Their two-year investigation showed that the colors used are also found in other works by Rembrandt of the same period. The painting technique and the layering of paint layers are also comparable. Scans revealed “compositional changes that confirm the authenticity of the work,” the museum stated.
The Confirmation and Public Exhibition
Finally, the signature was deemed original and the analysis of the wooden panel confirms that the date of 1633 on the painting is also correct. “It is a beautiful example of the unique way in which Rembrandt tells stories,” commented the director of the Rijksmuseum, Taco Dibbits. The work is now on long-term loan to the museum and will be exhibited to the public from Wednesday, March 4th.
