RE: https://journa.host/@samlitzinger/116177147514646177 I've had it with the #NewYorkTimes and their never-ending "both sides-ism." The paper obviously has thrown the mission of #journalism under the bus in its desire to pander to conservatives. It is not much better, IMHO, than the Bezos #WashingtonPost. #journalists #media #EpicFail #usa "The fundamental mission of journalism is to provide citizens with accurate, vetted, and timely information, enabling them to make informed decisions about their lives, communities, and governments. It acts as a watchdog to hold power accountable, gives voice to the voiceless, and fosters democracy. " Society of Professional Journalists https://www.spj.org/spj-code-of-ethics/

This is why Fox News is so fucking terrible. The headline here should be “Boebert (R-Co) illegally shares photo from Testimony; Clinton furious” but instead victim-blames Clinton because she (checks notes) was understandably upset that the shitty Republican be-iatch did so?!? The first half of the article is her reaction, burying *why* she was upset AND burying that she came back and testified for 9 hours anyway in the second half of the article. #foxnews #journalism #clinton #uspol

Local journalism matters, example number one-billion (approximately). After a report by London Centric, an independent site founded by ex-Guardian journalist Jim Waterson, a billionaire landlord has shelved plans to carry out mass evictions across London. Here's more from London Centric on how their story made a difference. https://flip.it/1YzcIu #London #Journalism #Media #IndependentJournalism #LocalNews

U.S. Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer appeared on a panel together at the 62nd Munich Security Conference along with Matthew Whittaker, United States ambassador to NATO. They talked about complicated issues of foreign policy and geo-diplomacy for an hour or so and it was, at the time, seen as an uncontroversial, non-newsworthy conversation. Yet a few days later, the press was full of stories about their slip-ups and lack of knowledge. Emily Horne, a former National Security Council and State Department spokesperson, did a deep dive into what had happened. What she found? Stories from "pink slime" sites — local news publications that are largely funded by right-wing dark money groups — picked up and "laundered" into real news by POLITICO, The New York Times and more. https://flip.it/usYHQu #News #Media #Journalism #MediaIndustry #AOC #GretchenWhitmer #PinkSlime

@QasimRashid@mastodon.social Too bad #Trump and #Carr are totally ignorant of the #StreisandEffect. If they'd let the Colbert/Talarico interview air on cBS, it wouldn't have racked up the views or boosted Talarico's fundraising efforts like the interview did on Colbert's #YouTube channel. #media #journalism #FCC #usa https://variety.com/2026/tv/news/stephen-colbert-james-talarico-interview-youtube-views-1236666068/

My mom got me interested in #journalism by reading me Herb Caen in the SF Chronicle every AM when I was a kid. So I have a sweet spot for columnists. We have had a good one for decades here in Eugene, Bob Welch. He wrote for the daily Register-Guard for years, and is now a contributor to Lookout Eugene, a local online paper. He also publishes on Substack, and this "column" on Artificial Intelligence in journalism is spot on. Seriously fooled me the way he wrote it. https://bobwelchwriter.substack.com/p/artificial-intelligence

Coyote Media, a worker-owned outlet based in the Bay Area, was approached by Luke Nover, a freelancer with a great story idea. Then editor Soleil Ho noticed something iffy about his social security number, began asking questions, and "Nover" — likely the product of a scammer with ChatGPT — ghosted her. Here's their story about what happened. https://flip.it/ygu_2d #Tech #News #Media #Journalism #AI

Those of us who work in the news business are highly aware of the perilous situation for local outlets, and how bad that could be for communities and democracy. The general public. however, don't seem to know or care. Here's NiemanLab's story on the results of new survey of adults who live in U.S. news deserts and news oases. https://flip.it/CK5iri #News #Media #Journalism #LocalNews

Last week's cuts at The Washington Post were even worse than initially reported. An accounting by the Washington-Baltimore Newspaper Guild, the union that represents Post journalists, says nearly half the paper's newsroom was eliminated. Here's more from Washingtonian. https://flip.it/c9PXlk #Journalism #Media #News #WashingtonPost

Just read this sobering retrospective from @NiemanLab on Jeff Bezos and the Washington Post. It tracks the arc from 2013—when Bezos was the "badass" billionaire savior of journalism—to February 2026, where he has largely gone silent during a "bloodbath" of layoffs (30% of the newsroom) and a pivot toward "free market" editorializing. The piece highlights: The 300+ jobs cut yesterday (Feb 4), including bureaus and the Amazon reporter. The shift from "curious steward" to distant owner. How the 2024 non-endorsement was just the start of a broader "preemptive obedience" to power. It’s a case study in how quickly a "pillar of democracy" can be hollowed out when its ownership priorities shift. Read more here: https://www.niemanlab.org/2026/02/something-i-will-be-most-proud-of-when-im-90-how-jeff-bezos-used-to-talk-about-the-washington-post-and-whats-changed/ #WashingtonPost #Journalism #Media #JeffBezos #FreePress #Democracy #MastodonNews

Democracy? What Democracy? It's all about the old mighty cold dollar... -> "When the World Wide Web went live in the early 1990s, its founders hoped it would be a space for anyone to share information and collaborate. But today, the free and open web is shrinking. The Internet Archive has been recording the history of the internet and making it available to the public through its Wayback Machine since 1996. Now, some of the world’s biggest news outlets are blocking the archive’s access to their pages. Major publishers – including The Guardian, The New York Times, the Financial Times, and USA Today – have confirmed they’re ending the Internet Archive’s access to their content. While publishers say they support the archive’s preservation mission, they argue unrestricted access creates unintended consequences, exposing journalism to AI crawlers and members of the public trying to skirt their paywalls. Yet, publishers don’t simply want to lock out AI crawlers. Rather, they want to sell their content to data-hungry tech companies. Their back catalogues of news, books and other media have become a hot commodity as data to train AI systems. https://theconversation.com/news-sites-are-locking-out-the-internet-archive-to-stop-ai-crawling-is-the-open-web-closing-274968 #OpenWeb #Media #InternetArchive #News #Newspapers #Journalism
