Today in Labor History April 30 1945: Eva Braun and Adolph Hitler committed suicide, in Berlin, after being married for less than 40 hours. Many Nazis were tried, convicted and executed. And literally thousands were secreted into the U.S., given false identities, and put to work as spies, intelligence officers, informants, and rocket scientists in the Cold War. Some of them had even been high-ranking Nazi Party officials, secret police chiefs, and heads of concentration camps. In fact, during the first few years after WWII ended, it was easier to get into the U.S. as a Nazi than it was as a Jewish concentration camp survivor. There were policy makers in Washington who said the Jews shouldn’t be let in because they’re “lazy” and “self-entitled.” For more on this sordid history, read “The Nazis Next Door How America Became a Safe Haven for Hitler's Men,” By Eric Lichtblau. #workingclass #LaborHistory #nazis #WorldWarTwo #holocaust #fascism #nazis #coldwar #concentrationcamps #hitler #jewish #antisemitism #books #nonfiction #author #writer @bookstadon@a.gup.pe

Today in Labor History April 19, 1936: Arabs in Mandatory Palestine began a General Strike that lasted into October. It marked the beginning of the 1936-1939 Arab revolt, which sought to end colonialism in the region and the immigration of Jews. There was also a General Strike going on in Mandatory Syria. The strikers were demanding that the British Government change its policies in the two territories by (1) prohibiting further Jewish immigration; (2) prohibiting the transfer of Arab land to Jews; (3) and the establishment of a National Government. In response, the British government imposed heavy fines and demolished Arab homes. Solidarity actions occurred in Cairo, Bagdad, Beirut. #workingclass #LaborHistory #generalstrike #palestine #zionism #colonialism #revolt #solidarity #FreePalestine

Proud to announce that my upcoming #nonfiction #picturebook is This Is Your Fight! Genora Johnson and the Flint Sit-Down Strike, to be published by Harper Collins next year. And it's being illustrated by The Brave Union (artists Kevin and Kristen Howdeshell)! Yesterday marked the anniversary of the end of the 1936-37 strike- one of the most successful in American history. Workers occupied GM factories in Flint and persuaded the automaker to recognize the UAW. Photo shows Genora (second in from the right) with fellow members of the Women's Emergency Brigade- a group she organized to protect the striking men. #unions #UAW #laborhistory #labor #generalstrike #books
