More registered US voters now view Israel negatively than positively for the first time in decades, thanks to Israel's genocide on Palestinians and, now, it's murderous rampage on Iran & Lebanon.
Last time Israel was this universally reviled was in the wake of its invasion and occupation of Lebanon in the 1980s.
Currently, more than 2/3 of Dems sympathize more with Palestinians than with Israelis, compared with 2013, when nearly twice as many sympathized more with Israelis.

Today in Labor History March 9, 1911: Frank Little and other free-speech fighters were released from jail in Fresno, California, where they had been fighting for the right to speak to and organize workers on public streets. Little was a Cherokee miner and IWW union organizer. He helped organize oil workers, timber workers and migrant farm workers in California. He participated in free speech fights in Missoula, Spokane and Fresno, and helped pioneer many of the passive resistance techniques later used by the Civil Rights movement. He was also an anti-war activist, calling U.S. soldiers “Uncle Sam’s scabs in uniforms.” 1917, he helped organize the Speculator Mine strike in Butte, Montana. Vigilantes broke into his boarding house, dragged him through the streets while tied to the back of a car, and then lynched him from a railroad trestle. Prior to Little’s assassination, Author Dashiell Hammett had been asked by the Pinkerton Detective Agency to murder him. Hammett declined.

Today in Labor History March 8, 1908: Thousands of workers in the New York needle trades (mostly women) launched a strike for higher wages, shorter hours and an end to child labor. They chose this date in commemoration of the 1857 strike, women garment workers struck in New York City for a 10-hour workday, better working conditions, and equal rights for women. In 1910, German communist Clara Zetkin proposed to the Second International, that March 8 be celebrated as International Women’s Day to commemorate the 1908 strike. In 1911, over 1 million people participated in International Women’s Day events in Austria-Hungary, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland. In Vienna, they carried banners honoring the martyrs of the Paris Commune. In 1917, Women’s Day protests and labor strikes in Petrograd helped spark the Russian Revolution. Because of its communist affiliations, and the anti-communist propaganda and persecution by the U.S. government, International Women’s Day was largely forgotten in the U.S., until feminist Laura X organized a protest in Berkeley, California on March 8, 1969. She also called for a Women’s History Month to be built around International Women’s Day. Later that year, she took the surname X to protest men’s legal ownership of women and the anonymity of women’s history.
In 1975, the United Nations recognized March 8 as International Women’s Day. In 1979, thousands of women protested in the streets of Tehran against the regime’s sexist laws, particularly the mandatory hijab. The six days of protest forced the government to temporarily withdraw the decree requiring veiling of women. But soon after this, the conservatives successfully eliminated what remained of the liberals and left, securing complete control of the government, and reintroduced the mandatory hijab, which remains to this day.

Today in Labor History March 7, 1965: “Bloody Sunday" occurred in Selma, Alabama, with state troopers attacking civil rights marchers. People had been protesting the disenfranchisement of African American voters. From January-February, 1965, the police arrested over 3,000 protesters. On February 26, the police murdered activist and deacon Jimmie Lee Jackson. In response, organizers planned a march from Selma to Montgomery.

Today in Labor History March 2, 1807: Congress abolished the African slave trade. The first American slave ship, Desire, sailed from Marblehead, Massachusetts, in 1637. After that, nearly 15 million Africans were transported as slaves to America. Overall, the African continent lost 50 million people to slavery and the deaths associated with it. Another 250,000 slaves continued to be illegally imported into the U.S. up until the Civil War.
The Thirteenth Amendment “prohibited” slavery throughout the USA, but with the following clause: “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States.” Jim Crow laws in the past and racial profiling today result in large numbers of African Americans being incarcerated and subjected to legal slavery. Sometimes prisoners have even been rented out to plantations that had used chattel slaves in the past. But with the U.S. having both the world’s highest number of incarcerated people (2.1 million) and the highest incarceration rate (665 per 100,000), there are a lot of people from all ethnicities being subjected to legal slavery.
And on this same date in 1859: The Great Slave Auction began. The two-day event was the largest such auction in U.S. history. The auction was held at Ten Broeck Race Course, near Savannah, Georgia. They sold 429 men, women, children and infants. Prior to the sale, they housed the slaves in stables. Journalist Mortimer Thomson pretended to be a buyer. He then wrote a scathing article titled, “What Became of the Slaves on a Georgia Plantation.”

The University of California-Davis has confirmed the first cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in seven northern elephant seals in California.
The outbreak marks the first H5N1 detection in marine mammals in California, and the first detection of the virus in northern elephant seals.
Last year, H5N1 decimated populations of southern elephant seals.
Meanwhile, a man died in Washington this past November from H5N5, the first known human case of this strain of highly pathogenic avian influenza.

The strike was called jointly by labor unions and farmers groups to demand the withdrawal of the four new labor codes and the recently signed trade deals with the US and the EU. Workers and farmers were joined by students, women’s organizations, and other civil society groups who came out in solidarity.

Today in Labor History February 21, 1848: Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels published the “Communist Manifesto,” in Brussels, just as the Revolutions of 1848 began to erupt across Europe. After the French overthrew their monarchy, revolutions broke out in Germany, Italy and Austria. When the Prussian democratic parliament collapsed, and the king imposed new counter-revolutionary measures, Marx moved to Paris, then London, where he and his family lived in poverty while he continued to publish. He wrote his most important work there, “Das Kapital.”

Today, for Black History Month, we honor the memory of Mary Fields (c. 1832–12/5/1914), also known as Stagecoach Mary, an American mail carrier who was the first Black woman to be employed as a star route postwoman in the United States. She was born into slavery. After emancipation, she worked as a chambermaid on a steamship, and as a household servant. In 1895, at the age of sixty, she got a job as a Star Route Carrier, which used a stagecoach to deliver mail in the harsh weather and rocky terrain of Montana. She carried multiple firearms, most notably a .38 Smith & Wesson under her apron to protect herself and the mail from wolves, thieves and bandits. She never missed a day, and her reliability earned her the nickname "Stagecoach Mary." When the snow was too deep for horses, she delivered the mail on snowshoes, carrying the sacks on her shoulders.

Today in Labor History February 13, 1967: The National Student Association revealed that it had "secretly and indirectly" received more than $3 million from the CIA over a 15-year period. NSA President Eugene Grove denied any of the money was used for intelligence work. The NSA had been involved in Civil Rights education and organizing in the 1950s and ‘60s, but was far more conservative than the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and Students for a Democratic Society. Today, in honor of Black History Month, we remember the first of the Nashville sit-ins, which occurred at three lunch counters in Nashville, Tennessee on this date, February 13, 1960. The protests were organized by black college students and lasted through May and were intended to end segregation at lunch counters. They were coordinated by the Nashville Student Movement and the Nashville Christian Leadership Council, and were part of the broader sit-in movement that spread across the southern United States in the wake of the Greensboro sit-ins in North Carolina.
The students were represented by a group of 13 lawyers, headed by Z. Alexander Looby. Racists bombed Looby's home on April 19. He, and his family, escaped uninjured. Later that day, over 3,000 people marched to City Hall to confront the mayor about the escalating violence. After subsequent negotiations, an agreement was reached in May, and six downtown stores began serving black customers at their lunch counters for the first time.

Today in Labor History February 13, 1945: 25,000 civilians died when the Allies firebombed Dresden. In a three-day period, they dropped 3,900 tons of explosives and incendiaries, reducing six square miles of the city to rubble. Kurt Vonnegut was a prisoner of war in Dresden during the bombing. He wrote about it in his novel, “Slaughterhouse-Five.”

Today in Labor History February 13, 1837: A Flour Riot occurred in New York City. 6,000 New Yorkers, attending a "bread, meat, rent, and fuel" meeting in Chatham Square, assaulted local flour merchants who they claimed were hoarding flour in order to drive up the price. The Locofocos (a libertarian-like faction of the Democratic Party that opposed Tammany Hall) organized a public protest against runaway prices that turned into a riot. The police arrested 40 people.
