Opinion Voices | Contributor: The inequality gap we should be talking about: marriage by Veronique de Rugy AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information. The article argues that the “marriage gap” – the declining stability of two‑parent families – is the most consequential but overlooked inequality in the United States, profoundly affecting children’s education, earnings and social mobility. Research cited from the American Enterprise Institute shows that in the mid‑20th century only 5 % of children were born out of wedlock, compared with 40 % today, and that U.S. children are far more likely than those in other nations to live with a single parent. Millennials raised in intact families are far more likely to graduate college (40 % vs. 17 %) and attain middle‑class incomes (77 % vs. 57 %) than those from non‑intact homes, and they face lower incarceration risks. The decline in marriage has been steepest among the least‑educated, with marriage rates falling about 46 percentage points for low‑educated women versus 17 points for the highly educated. The piece also highlights that federal welfare programs effectively penalize marriage – for example, a couple each earning $30,000 loses roughly $5,000 in Earned Income Tax Credit and faces phase‑outs of Medicaid, housing vouchers and SNAP when they marry – discouraging family formation and reinforcing single‑parent disadvantage. The author concludes that removing these marriage penalties, or redesigning the safety net, may be essential to improving economic mobility and reducing inequality. "But health policy analysts, advocates for the poor, and health industry groups remain skeptical, fearing thousands of Nebraska Medicaid enrollees will lose coverage and, with it, their access to health services and protection from medical debt." https://kffhealthnews.org/medicaid/nebraska-medicaid-work-requirement-fears-losing-coverage/ #healthcare #medicaid #ACA #obamacare #nebraska #USpol

"In 2023, Florida lawmakers unanimously approved expanding KidCare to close the gaps for families like Lafortune’s, raising the eligibility threshold so that coverage would extend to more than 40,000 children. But the expanded coverage has not taken effect...because the administration of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican, has not implemented the changes." https://kffhealthnews.org/insurance/chip-expansion-florida-delay-children-health-coverage-uninsured-rates/ #healthcare #ACA #obamacare #medicaid #ChildrensHealth #CMS #florida

Oh my, 2026 is definitely the year of transitions for me. Not only am I retiring small loans from my parents and ex that I am no longer in contact with in a couple months, but I've decided I'll be coming off Medicaid (state health insurance) when my current plan ends at the end of November. I'm currently in what they call the "buy in program". Basically I earn too much public benefit to qualify for Medicaid, but as long as I earn something in a plan year, I can pay to play. I'm fully disabled with no income, and so this has to change. It does mean incurring new costs, but it simplifies things too, as some medical providers will not work with patients who have Medicaid in their profile. It also stops my guilt and head trip that I briefly had minimal income when first qualifying for the buy-in program a couple years ago, but haven't since. Very excited at all this self discovery and evolution I'm personally invoking! 😀 #LifeTransitions #Medicaid #HealthInsurance

"Nebraska is racing to implement Medicaid work requirements by May 1 — eight months before the national deadline set by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act passed by Congress last summer. And not only is the state first out of the gate, its government plans to do it without hiring any additional staff..." https://www.politico.com/news/2026/04/14/medicaid-nebraska-work-requirements-expansion-00869387 #healthcare #medicaid #ACA #obamacare #insurance #CMS #disabilities #RuralHealth #poverty #nebraska

"But the state Department of Public Health and Human Services postponed adding doula services to its Medicaid program in late March, citing a budget shortfall driven in part by higher-than-expected Medicaid costs." https://kffhealthnews.org/news/article/doula-care-indigenous-health-medicaid-cuts-montana-tribe/ #healthcare #medicaid #ReproHealth #ReproJustice #pregnancy #doulas #RuralHealth #NativeAmerican #Indigenous #Cheyenne #CostsOfCare

"Last August, as part of the federal government’s crackdown on people in the country illegally, the Trump administration sent states the names of hundreds of thousands of Medicaid enrollees with orders to determine whether they were ineligible based on immigration status. But seven months later, findings from five states shared with KFF Health News show that the reviews have uncovered little evidence of a widespread problem." https://kffhealthnews.org/news/article/medicaid-undocumented-enrollees-review-few-violators/ #medicaid #HHS #CMS #immigration #USpol

"Deliberately reducing a person’s income and savings to qualify for Medicaid can sound daunting. But without planning, the high cost of long-term care can quickly drain savings anyway. Assisted living and nursing home care can cost thousands of dollars a month, often forcing families to exhaust their resources before qualifying for assistance." https://apnews.com/article/medicaid-spend-down-nursing-home-care-costs-2295b93a42ecd32ea16fa9042e4c28c6 #healthcare #medicaid #medicare #NursingHome #SkilledNursing #HomeHealth #aging #PersonalFinance

Private Equity bros that I have complained about after they purchased the large medical practice that has my PCP, that they have sinced gutted, de-staffed, pulled all the money out of, polluted with call centers and Automated help, and are killing, just sent a referral for care that I do not need that, have not requested that they get a financial cut from, that was digitally signed by my doctor, and he was not aware of, nor requested or approved, and we both are pissed now. A year or so ago, they did this shit with the mail order colon cancer testing kits that is not recommended for me because I have had polyps removed regularly since I was a teen because colon cancer runs deep in the family, and I get regular, advanced colon cancer screenings. They ordered them for every patient in their large, multi-state practice... This time from an LLC that the investment bros own. This is the real #Medicare #Medicaid #HealthInsurance fraud that goes on.

"Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) Friday secured a Senate vote on his amendment to the government funding package to repeal the $75 billion funding increase for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) — originally included in Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” (OBBB). The amendment would use those savings to reverse #Medicaid cuts in the OBBB, preventing 700,000 Americans from losing their health care.”
