EU #ewaste GAMECHANGER: iFixit says that by mid-2027, some EU consumer electronics devices must have user-replaceable batteries.
A battery is going to go bad roughly twice as quick as anything else in normal use. This is HUGE and builds on the HUGE win of USB-C for everything.
Unfortunately, apparently many phones can be exempted from the process. One way is by meeting "longevity" requirements which is silly to me.

Been thinking about echoes of culture that outlive the source. For example, things your parents heard from their grandparents that they never told you about.
Today, we see not a fresh and new 2026, but layers of culture added over the old. Obviously, the cultures and practices of the 1950s are still present today, because people who lived through those times are still alive. More interestingly, there are still traces of the 1900s, because people who were alive then influenced people who are still here. This is unfortunately true with politicians.
Most things new and old are forgotten quickly, but some things persist, sometimes far beyond expectations (cave paintings).

AOM is also working on OAC, the successor to the #Opus audio codec. I'm surprised for a few reasons:
1. Didn't feel like there was any room to grow. AAC is transparent at 192k if not lower. Opus is great at 96k and hopefully transparent at some point (128k?).
2. Opus has been around over a decade yet still feels like it hasn't had its moment. It's used in the background a lot (even at Netflix and Spotify?) but I always hesitate to share Opus because it never seems to fucking work on e.g. Discord and iOS.
3. MP3 was tinkered with for decades and grew into LAME with VBR so a 20 year old codec was still fantastic.
4. Opus is the greatest name for an audio codec of all time.
But I suppose AI or traditional codecs will continue to improve, especially below 96k.

I used to really admire creative commons. before AI, licensing works under creative commons was a win-win. I wish Wikipedia didn't allow commercial reuse, but otherwise, the CC suite of licenses are good. But it seems they've shown their true colors as a copyright minimalist group. And here again, AI has recalibrated my thinking. I see every AI firm ripping the internet limb from limb. bots have made the internet worse for every human user. the benefit to us, if one exists, are the table scraps we get in LLMs like chatgpt, and media generators that can make pictures, video, and so on. It's not a trade most people would make willingly. the most profound benefit I've ever had from generative AI saved me a couple hours of work at best. Its best use case is in coding, which has nothing to do with CC licensed works (most code is under GPL or MIT).
So Creative Commons is deliberately not coming out with new licenses that specifically prohibit AI training but allow pro-social reuse. And their stance is that training AI on copyrighted works is legal (fair use). I have art that I want to share with human beings because being part of a society means even if I am not specifically compensated for sharing my art, my art's presence in the world is a benefit to society. It's my way to grow the commons and recognize the value I get from other people's CC art. Contributing art under the iron fist of AI provides that same tiny benefit, but a load of harms. Along with the societal negativity of fraudulent media being posted as real, the profits these companies intend to make are not flowing downward. These companies are run by the most anti-social people in the most anti-social city in the world. Giving my art to them is like loading the gun myself.

The vendor secure erase command is often more secure. Partly because it's supposed to wipe areas not exposed to the user.
Ideally I would use a random pattern because it makes recovery even more difficult. Good news, I have a pending blog post that asserts that such recovery is de facto impossible.

I'm not in #publichealth, but I don't see why person-to-person transmission of disease can't be eliminated. Seems we just lack the willpower. Airborne disease would be easiest, via ventilation, filtration, masks, isolation, and vaccination.
We were on track to eradicate polio, but thanks to the work of Elon Musk and RFK, we have likely set back the cause decades.
Ending HIV transmission seems possible via education, PrEP, and early detection, but I can't find much online.
