It doesn't matter so much whether readers know the traditional meaning of "instar" is when you're not using it that way anyway. You'll make it clear from context what you're talking about, and readers will get that just fine.
It's Sci-Fi: you're already talking about three-toed robot rocket ships taking over inside-out asteroids, or whatever. A little numbering of reincarnations isn't going to throw many readers off.
Some will get the "instar" reference to insect biology, some won't. But isn't that sort of thing what gives a novel its depth?
