@NikJov @lexipic @Dennislong82 If those volunteers are consciously violating the rights of users of Be My Eyes, then, in my view, BME would be better off not having such volunteers.

@NikJov @lexipic @Dennislong82 I think any organization who uses volunteers can do quite a lot and require volunteers use their real names, and perhaps even disclose what social media platforms they post on or have a presence on. The idea being to say ... we're watching you.

@NikJov @Dennislong82 @lexipic My legal background leads me to say otherwise. That's why employers and businesses often require employees, even of non-profit organizations, to sign confidentiality agreements. Be My Eyes could easily require that of volunteers, and volunteers could be required to use their legal names. It isn't a perfect world, but laws do have teeth.

@Dennislong82 @lexipic I do believe there is more they could do, yes! An email saying ... pretty please, don't do this ... is not of much value, I don't think. As i said earlier, it is just a start. Something else i don't understand is why the blindness community, as a whole, is not speaking to this. Of course, this is not the only case where something should be done and isn't. 😣

@Dennislong82 @lexipic I will be cautious about using BME from now on, but I would hate to see it gone. I think the way to resolve this is with some serious consequences to volunteers who record audio or video as they're helping someone. If that doesn't work, I think BME should be held legally responsible under the law, if they cannot stop this behavior. After all, if I have a service animal, and that animal damages property or harms someone, I could be held legally responsible under the law. So, to say that a company cannot resolve this problem, I think, is an catch-all excuse not to do anything. Platitudes don't change situations, constructive action does.

@Dennislong82 @lexipic Yes, I asked these very questions earlier--and the response was mostly that it's an unsolvable problem. Well, anything is unsolvable if no one as made to care, and the way forward, as I see it, is to have serious consequences for wrongdoing, not a cadre of excuses.

@Lisasali @ppatel @mcourcel @LeonianUniverse Yes, I'm done them that way too. I've sometimes split them open and put butter in the middle also.

Lately, i've just been doing them in the microwave. No foil of course. I have these oval shaped dishes for baking potatoes that I bought in the microwave cookware section at target, about 20 years ago. They work pretty well. The skin even is a little crispy.

@ppatel @mcourcel @LeonianUniverse That is pretty neat. Come to think of it, in recent years, I've not had a dry steak at a steakhouse, so that's probably why. The Longhorn makes wonderful baked potatoes. I wonder if they use a similar process? I've done baked potatoes wrapped in foil, but somehow, they don't come out as well as the ones at the Longhorn.

@LeonianUniverse No one has ever said that to me, but if they do, well that's okay. I use my rice cooker more for other things than rice than I do for rice. I use it to make soup, hard boil eggs, cooking oatmeal, cooking dried beans--and I'm sure I'm forgetting some other things--or yes pasta and noodles. I've found that a lot of the rice cooker recipes, just like microwave directions are terrible. Food cooked in the microwave, according to most directions is not good. So, I only read the directions to see what I might learn from them, but hardly every follow them. With a rice cooker, unless you have a fancy one, which I don't, you have two temperature settings, cook and warm. So, what one has to do is add the ingredients in an order that won't over cook them. I do this all the time with soups, and after a few experiments, I've mostly learned how to do this. I haven't used the stove to make soups for a long time. And when I make oatmeal in the microwave, all I heat is the water, to nearly boiling. I pour that water over my oatmeal in a bowl and let it sit for a minute or two without staring. It comes out just like stove top oatmeal. No one taught me this, I just learned by doing.

@LeonianUniverse I do agree with you. It's one thing when you're served something at someone's home, but it's quite another when you order food from a restaurant. The restaurant should make it as you ask. For instance, I don't like seasoning on my burger or steak. So many places use spicy seasoning, so I order it with no seasoning. If I'm at someone's home for a BBQ and they serve burgers, I eat it without saying anything. People who know me though usually keep a patty or two out for me, just because they know I like it that way.

@amy0223 @frog67 It is near impossible to read ingredient lists for absolutely everything, and this is a prime example of why not doing so could be very dangerous. Some people have fish allergies. The other issue is, a lot of these manufacturers change around certain ingredients by saying and/or to this or that. Sometimes, you really don't know if something contains a specific ingredient or not.

@baxaphobia @technocounselor @kernsac @amy0223 my problem with it is it's more difficult for me to tell things I need to know about the surface I am walking on, such as how slippery it is, etc. I dislike all that cushioning. I wear tread safe shoes. The soles are good, and I can feel what is under my feet. Even the slippers I wear have none of that memory foam in them.

@kernsac @baxaphobia @amy0223 I was almost ten also--must be a magical age or something. Dad and I were sitting at the kitchen table with his size 13 shoe, and all of a sudden I tied a perfect bow. He didn't seem surprised, but I sure was.

Not being able to tie my shoes had upset me for a couple of years. I was always worried they would come untied, and I'd have to ask someone to tie it for me. I never had to do that, but it was a huge relief knowing I could tie my own shoes and other things that required a bow.

@baxaphobia @amy0223 Not really! You just like pretty clothes, dressing up, etc. That isn't a crime. I like my jeans and t-shirts, and hope to never have to dress up again. We're just different people is all.

@baxaphobia @amy0223 They do tend to flatten things out, but since I am home most of the time, that doesn't matter to me. I find them more comfortable and practical. I wish I'd discovered them years ago.

@amy0223 I'm grateful my mom showed me how to do all the personal care, cleaning and cooking skills, I would need for living, whether by myself, or with someone else. I wore the usual hook-type bras until just a few years ago, when I discovered sports bras. I find them more comfortable, and I don't have to worry about any hooks getting caught on other clothes in the washer.

I've clipped my own finger and toe nails--probably since I was ten or so. I keep both short because I've never had any desire for longer manicured nails. I can see where some of these things can be difficult for someone with coordination problems though. In any case, the bottom line is, if you can't or choose not to do something yourself, the next step is to find reasonable alternatives to accomplish it.

The one thing I struggled with, as a kid, was tying my shoes. Tying a bow was something I had difficulty doing. But, bless my dad, he would keep showing me, over and over. I'd get so frustrated. He'd say that one of these days, I would just get how to do it. And he was right. One day, it just came together for me. Even now, I think about that when I tie my shoes or other things I have to tie.

There really are a million little things a person has to learn how to do in life. Often, these things are not difficult, but children with disabilities sometimes just need more hands on time learning these skills. But they are so very necessary.
